Approximately how many pigs have to die so that one person will have one day of heparin therapy?

Let's see here............

Let's see here............

 I bet not as many as die for bacon or other B-B-Q delights. Eh Ross?:D

Why do you have to make these so hard?

I can't wait for someone to come along and say "It's easy- everyone knows it is 2.14/day!"

Yeah, but think about all the rats we are saving by taking Coumadin that otherwise might be used to bring about their demise!

And the answer is, I have no clue! I didn't even know that heparin came from pigs! But I guessed anyway!

Heperin comes from PIIIIGSSSSSS ??????? As a vegetarian, I just have to say.....THAT's gross!!!

Lovenox, Fragmin etc are also extracted from the lining of the pig's stomach.

Most estrogen comes from horse urine. Premarin is a contraction of PREgnant MARe's urINe.

Oh no! They gave me heparin while I was in the hospital! Fortunately when the rabbi came to visit, he didn't notice the IV bag full of non-kosher stuff. I would gotten a real tongue lashing (but not a pigs tongue) :D

There is a long list of medical products that come from animals besides heart valves.

Hope you don't up-chuck next time you get a flu shot- that's right, CHICKENS:D

Armour thyroid is made

Armour thyroid is made

from desiccated pig thyroid glands. Yes, gross sounding but I would rather take Armour Thyroid than any kind of synthetic thyroid replacement.

However, I would NEVER take estrogens made from horse urine. What they do to the horses to make the estrogen is inhumane (constantly kept pregnant) and also it is just NOT good for a woman to take.

P.S. Ross - Viagra probably comes from bunny rabbits. Hee.

I guessed two pigs.

Al-
With the answer, could you please let us know where heparin comes from on the pig? I would be surprised if ANY pigs died to produce heparin. I would imagine that the pig was actually killed for bacon and pork chops...

:)

I guessed too.

I guessed too.

And I guessed two. :D

I seriously doubt any pig is killed solely for the purpose of the heparin...... thrifty heart patients that we are....we've just learned to use the scraps. :p :D

I feel no guilt, Mr. Al. :p

The heparin comes from the lining of the stomach of the pig. So, yes they are killed for other reasons. If we need more heparin the only thing that would suffer would come up short would be chitterlings (chitlins). Back in the 70s there was a time when hog prices went so high that people were not eating as much pork. There was a small heparin shortage. There was an effort underway to declare that heparin could be a primary pork product. This would have allowed the slaughtering of pigs for heparin and dumping the meat on the market at less than the market price.

A good time to remind ourselves that heparin has never been shown to be safe and effective for use with heart valves. It was on the market for more than 20 years before the artificial heart valve came along. By that time it was too late for anyone to want to fund testing for this. It is only "tradition" that backs its use.

Rain, I forgot, the school had arranged a place for Develyn to live.

I'm not going to cheat and look it up, so I'm completely stumped, Al.

I also imagine most of it is from food-chain-bound swine. I grabbed a valve as the last one came by, too...

Best wishes,

I wonder if it´s known in the muslim world, heparin comes from
pigs? Would a good muslim use it knowingly?

Wellllllllll..............

Wellllllllll..............

Since Katie can't have heparin any more, we will stick to bacon and ham for our piggy consumption...............unless, of course, argatroban is from pigs, too. Anyone know? J.

Thanks, Al!

Thanks, Al!

Argatroban is synthetic.

I thought so!

So how long do we have to suffer? When are you gonna let the cat out of the bag - or should that be the pig out of the sty? :D Hugs. J.

Just read the top of the poll! Never mind.................sigh!

Approximately one pig. There is about 30,000 units of heparin in the gastric mucosa of an average pig. This is about enough to treat one person for one day.
