I have sent all of my records to the Cleveland Clinic for review, just awaiting their call. I also have an appointment at Emory with Dr. Chen for a consultation on September 10th. Wow, it is really happening. This will be my second OHS and way more nervous this time.
I had MVR in 1989 and now I need AVR and possibly MAZE and not sure about the Mitral re-do. When I had my Heart Cath, the afib was interfering with some of the results. It seems like a lot to take on in one surgery and that is why I am considering Cleveland Clinic. Any experience and / or input regarding Cleveland Clinic as well as travel for surgery would be appreciated.

If he brings you to it, he will bring you through it.

I've been there twice and have been very happy. Both times, we stayed at the Intercontinental Suites. It's very nice and certainly not the cheapest option but I wanted my wife to be comfortable while I was in the hospital. The shuttle bus makes it very convenient to be an out-of-town patient. The added cost of plane tickets and hotel rooms added considerably to the overall cost but I was comforted by the fact that my surgical team was very very experienced. Are you considering any particular surgeon?

Guyswell - Thank you for the information. I am in agreement that the expense is worth the peace of mind.
I am considering Dr. Gillinov for my surgery. Traveling for surgery is not the ideal way to go but I believe it to be the best option for me.
My only concern is having issues after I get back home -
Did you fly or drive? It will be about a 2 hour flight and 45 minute drive home.
