I have been in perm A/Fib now for approx 2 years after having a failed full Maze Procedure 3 years ago,.
In April last year I had a bout of NSR for 3 days and again in July last year for about the same period but apart from that being in Perm A/fib it is bearable and all I take is 25 mg Atenolol night and morning plus the usual Warfarin (Mechanical Aorta)replaced 3 years ago at the time of the Failed Maze.
Now yesterday 12th Feb 09 3am I went back in to NSR ? and I sometimes wonder if "One Day"?? the maze scars around my heart may work ?
My BP is good 120/80 but pulse is between 44bpm and 54 bpm this morning at 6am .
I have found that it is a waste of time notifing my Cardio / GP ect as they really do not have any answers and I would expect that I will probably go back into A/Fib in about 2 to 3 days , my heart is sound with no other underlying heart problems .
Has anybody else had the phenonemon ? while it's great to be back in NSR I don't trust what is going on and I am expecting to go back to A/F anytime.
My valve is fine and that does not give me any problems .
As I am writing this letter at 6.30 am my pulse is still slow 53BPm with the odd missed beat and my BP is 104/72 .
I look forward to getting some feedback from members..............

Regards...Kevin

Just quickly logged in before I get ready to go to work....don't have any answers for you Kevin, but hope you are feeling okay.

Perhaps, because you have gone back into sinus rhythm, your heart rate has also decreased, due to the Atenolol? When I was on Sotalol my heart rate was between 50-60 a lot of the time - now I am not on it it's around 75 plus usually.
Also, first thing in the morning is usually when your pulse is the slowest, isn't it? My husband is/was an athlete and he reckons that that was the best time to take his pulse, to assess his fitness etc etc - his pulse was sometimes just below 50 - that was when he was superfit, training for marathons etc.

Your BP sounds okay - mine is pretty low most of the time too.

Bridgette:)

I will give you a call after work.

I had A-fib problems for about 15 days after my aortic valve and ascending aorta replaced in Aug. of 08. My cardio put me on amiodarone, and it cleared up and back in NSR in about 5 days. I'm on a low dose of 200mg a day and he said I shouldn't have any of the bad side affects that amiodarone can have. My resting HR is between 45 and 50, with no other side affects. Maybe you could shop around for a different cardio, and ask for this medication for at least a short time trial to see if it will help you! :)

I had afib since i got endocarditis in 2006,second surgery just on jan 22
and my surgeon did a maze proceedure and they had to use the paddles
3 different occasions on me to get the maxe to work, but to my knowledge
that didn't do the trick and like David L's post i have since been put on the
drug Amiodarone and am finding also at 200mg daily,my system is finding it
a difficult drug to accept,i do see my cardiologist and surgeon in March
for follow ups and will raise my concern then to them,as from what i've
read it takes some time for this drug to work into and through our organs
and suppose to be very hard on the liver.
I started out 40 mgs at hospital then as soon as i came home went to
200mg daily as insructed and seems any change of mg's will change your
inr readings drastically, but as far as afib i do see a difference in myself
my concern is the safety of this drug for long periods of time and what i
have read.
my first surgery for aortic was 16 years ago for mech.valve i still have
2nd surgery in jan was for my native mitral changed to st.jude mech.
it was full of rheumatic fever from when i was young, the endocarditis
didnot hit any valves but granted me the a-fib was how i got that.

chronic A/fib

chronic A/fib

The Maze proceedure is not as successful in previous permanent A/fib as it is in curing paroxysmal A/fib.Rate control is thought to be much more important than rhythm control these days and your rate is very good. There is always a good chance that you may remain in sinus rhythm this time.Warfarin is very protective for people with AF provided your INR is kept at the target level. There are also drugs other than beta blockers that can be used.I am not sure whether cardioversion can be used in people who have had a failed Maze procedure.I have known people to have had chronic AF in excess of 30 years without problems. You obviously need to discuss these issues with a cardiologist.Hope this helps.
