Hi Guys,Had my AVR and maze radiofrequency ablation 26/2/09.OK first 2 days apparently according to my family but when I got back to the step down ward had pretty aweful gut trouble.Needed loads of laxative which caused a reaction and left me nauseus and heaving for a couple of days, hardly ate at all. With regard to the AVR I'm quietly ticking. No arrythmias for first 5 days and through lack of sleep that night I was rehersing my words for the surgeon to allow me home the following day.Unfortunately at 6.45 I went into AF.Called the nurses to do an ECG who were amazed that I new my rythms.I thought this is going to knock me back another few days but apparently not.Prof(surgeon)said it happens to 40% of people with this type of op and that I would either spontaneously revert or he would arrange a cardioversion for 6 weeks time.I was pleased but a little worried because the AF makes me feel like crap.He wouldn't give me amiodarone because I had it for 2 days post op and it caused some AV Nodal dissociation.Home now and in odd types of rythm, sinus mostly at rest, lots of ectopics and completely irregular (AF) if I do anything.I get short of breath after walking upstairs. It's too wet back here at present to attempt going out.I'm just hoping it's all going to settle. My irregular rythm and the weather.

Great news

Great news

Hi Barrie,

Great news that you got through the surgery. I've been keeping an eye out for you and am glad the prof got you through the surgery. Your right about it being wet here at the moment, but fingers crossed it will clear up soon and you can get out walking.

Keep us updated on your progress,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,Prof is great and the staff on C5 will look after you very well. It's a very busy ward and everyone got through their particular surgery. With me it's just this damn AF which just won't go away.Best of luck with your surgery.Barrie

Welcome home! I wouldn't take Amiodarone unless nothing else on the planet worked. Lets hope you convert normally and don't have need for cardioversion.

Barrie,
I too had an arrhythmia after surgery (A-flutter) and walking even short distances caused shortness of breath. It really set back my recovery, but my surgeon recommended that I wait about 3 months post op and let my heart heal from the surgery before doing a cardioversion. I know its tough, but hang in there and let your heart heal up and if you don't self-convert, I hope the electrical cardioversion solves your problem.

Welcome home! The arrhythmia garbage hits many of us.
Mine was also around day 5 during the night.....I was awakened with a HR of 170 and was given Sotalol.
3 yrs later and I'm still on Metoprolol to help control SVT and PACs.
Best wishes that this clears up for you. :)

i agree with Ross,so what the heck am i on amiodarone for,cus i have quite
aways to drive to see my cardio but i dropped alot of weight i was 160 lbs with fluid build up after surgery as it was 3o some lbs of water came off of me,so i hit 190 at the time i entered surgery.

I had to be cardioverted x3 seperate days and put me on this stuff(amiodarone 5oo mgs i'm down to 200mg now but it really messes inr up
at mg changes and hard for me to get to a perfect number of warfarin in mgs.
i threw up violently and finally my cardio called me after speaking to the surgeon and he the cardio says i may have to go into hospital to come off this crap, to be monitored. (oh yay),but im down to 130 in my weight and
i throw up anything i eat, plus i have to push the food into me,as im not hungry,no appetite.let you know when i go on the 25th,my family dr. agrees
it's the aniodarone, says its a terrible drug, although i have no a-fib,be it the cardioversions or this drug,i will find out.
food the looks of it turns me off and i know anesthisis will do this, however
i donot eat much and throw up bile, even when i push food for strenght.
i have lost an awful lot of weight and feel weak.

i wish you good luck with all this

Thanks for all the replies guys it's great to know how much support there is out there. My problem is one of poor acceptance of ill health in myself I want to get out there on this exercise programme and KNOW this AF is going to hold me back because of the shortness of breath that comes with it.I'll post again soon.

Don't worry about it to much. It is not unusual to go into A-Fib after having an ablation. I went into it very badly after my second one. It takes time for the heart to heal from this proceedure, and like me sometimes you have to have another one. I remember my first one well, It was done with a laser, and I woke up smelling BBQ. I always tell that joke it gets alot of laughs.

Best of luck to you & I hope all will be well with you in the future. Just look below at my signature & you'll know I know where you are coming from. :(

It is very important to get your rest & not over exert yourself for 6 weeks. DON"T EVEN carry the groceries into your house. It is important not to lift anything heavy, or walk to far. I get very winded when I'm in A-Fib. Allow family & friends to help you.
