My wife has been doing research on the benefits of detoxing for heavy metals and doing various kinds of cleanses. I am concerned that these will adversely effect my INR. Has anyone had experience with this as to what the recommendations would be? Thanks

I have done a few detoxes and it really helped me with my allergies. However, I am neither a valve patient nor on coumadin and I have seen detox products that carried a warning not to use when on Warfarin.
I am not a coumadin expert but I think you'd have a heck of a time staying on INR target. I think it would draw the Coumadin right out. I wouldn't risk it. My husband is the valve patient (not on Coumadin) and I told him not to do a detox as it really is stressful on the body. Well, some of them are. There are different ways.
There are other things you can 'help' your body while on coumadin safely like massages or acupuncture. I knew of one person who did acupuncture while on Coumadin wihtout any problems (as long as sterile needles are used). You should always check with a doctor.
Detoxifying body wraps may also be an option - I don't think it would affect the INR that much but you would have to do your own research on that and check with a doctor.
Good luck. Hope someone else comes along who is more experienced:)

Great topic!

I have not tried a detox, would like to. Specifically the liver. Have looked @ a 3 day program that includes one day of fasting and two days of different dietary meals. No supplements. The sups are what is keeping me from even attempting this in the first place. I would suspect the liver detox will effect the INR. As we metabolize the meds directly through the liver. In that case...a colon cleansing program may work (safer).

I figure if the Good lord intended to us to be cleaned out like that, we would be naturally. I can't see any good coming from manually voiding the body of things.

HA HA HA! Well, TMI, today I am a bit down and out. Ate out twice yesterday. Not the norm. Paying dearly! That may be all the cleaning I need.

Maybe it's just a wild thought but...

Maybe it's just a wild thought but...

Some of these posts have made me wonder whether a cleanse/detox is a little bit similar to the detoxing in kidney dialysis. I wonder if further searching along that train of thought would produce more information in connection to remaining safely anticoagulated?

Seems like what she was looking at was some of these regimens that are designed to get heavy metals out of our systems. I guess I have resisted for some of the very reasons others have mentioned. Was curious if anyone on warfarin had done one and the results to their INR?

The one who would probably have an answer for you is Al Lodwick. He ran a Coumadin clinic and I'm sure he's encountered about all there is to encounter doing so. Sometimes he pops his head in here, but if not soon, you can email him at [email protected]

I am familiar with alot of the detoxs out there. I think they usually are a good idea! With that said, one on coumadin would have to be careful of them. If you do them, I would recommend not sticking with the "usual dose". Go slowly-read this once again-slowly with the brand you choose. It should affect the INR. Done slowly should produce good results but not create havoc to your body suddenly and make your blood levels go crazy.Don't sacrifice a "clean organs inside" detox idea with bringing your INR too low/high and the side effects from it.

Thanks for the input. Would still like to hear from anyone actually taking Warfarin that has done a cleanse as to the results they had to their INR.

I have been on Coumadin since 2000 and I know lemon water cleans out your liver and kidneys. When I drink lemon water my inr goes down. You might want to ask your cardiologist about a liver detox.
