Hi all - I need your wisdom.

I just had a BNP test done for heart failure as my doctor wanted done (although he said he was 99.9% sure I did not have heart failure). I do have a call in right now to the doc on-call to discuss this value also. I don't want to go through the weekend being a wreck.

This particular lab said their "normal" is 0-99 and my BNP was 66. Is this good? Does this mean I do not have CHF?

This has been harder than having my surgery - getting this blood test, I have been so scared.

The doctor on call just called me back and said this is within the normal range and I do not have CHF. :) :) :)

I would, however, appreciate any and all opinions on the BNP test. Oh my gosh, Emma Jewell is going to be a reality - our dossier is done and is being sent to China next week. I was going to cancel our adoption if the BNP was high.

After my Mom died of breast cancer at 64 years of age, her being a devout Christian GOOD woman - and she was prayed over in the church - I don't believe that God picks and chooses, ya know, but I am very thankful to Him right now if you can understand.

Sounds to me like you are very normal- right in the middle!:) So glad you have the dossier ready to go- best wishes for a speedy and happy adoption!

Bnp

Brain natriuretic peptide Normal: 0?99 picograms per milliliter (pg/mL) or 0-99 nanograms per liter (ng/L) SI units. No heart failure is present.

Abnormal: 100?300 pg/mL or 100-300 ng/L (SI units) suggests heart failure is present.

300 pg/mL or 300 ng/L (SI units) or higher is mild heart failure.

600 pg/mL or 600 ng/L (SI units) or higher is moderate heart failure.

900 pg/mL or 900 ng/L (SI units) or higher is severe heart failure.

Christina, don't make the mistake of thinking that since normal is 0-99 that 66 means you are more towards the bad side of normal and then start worrying that you're going to creep up to 99 or above. You're normal, period.

If 0-99 is normal, then 66 sounds really good to me. Sounds like your fear of heart failure has been made a non-issue. Best wishes dear - bring on the baby!

You do not have heart failure and there is a little girl who needs you to be her mom. Go for it. I am waiting for the news that you have her and then you will need to post a pic of you with her. So exciting!!

How WELL you know

How WELL you know

me, Karlynn!! :) After crying buckets of relieved tears, yes, then I started to think, well, I am above the halfway mark - could this get worse??? Then I have to put it in perspective and just be glad my BNP value wasn't 98!!!

I will be talking to my main (new) cardiologist on Monday hopefully and he will set me straight on just how normal I am. The cardio on call tonight said you are within the range of normal, you are fine, you are not in CHF. But yes, I am wondering, what would a normal heart's BNP be?? You just can't win with me.

However, I cannot explain how terrifying this latest chapter in my heart saga was.

BTW when I saw the new cardiologist the other day I forgot to tell you that he told me I should live to be a normal life expectancy of 80-85 years (heart wise that is). God only knows my future, but I will take that! The cardio also said that the radiologist in Cleveland who did an overread on my scary echo from last November is brilliant, one of the best (my cardio knows of him) - so I guess I should trust what that radiologist said about my heart being normal in size (maybe upper limits of normal, but....).

My cardio ALSO told me for all you valvers out there, that he had just done a perfectly normal catheterization on an elderly lady who had had her mechanical mitral valve for almost 30 years (her heart was in great shape). So, we are all blessed to be living in this day and age.

Back Doc - thanks for the great info on BNP values. I guess I am "normal" BNP-wise, but not normal in other ways. ;)

Phyllis - you always are so encouraging and know the right words to say. Thanks for your good wishes on our adoption. I am getting more excited by the day, BUT you know, we have about a year's wait now for the referral letter and photo of our daughter. That seems an eternity, but now I will treasure each day of our waiting for her, after what I just went through.

Thanks again. I am walking around in a daze tonight - just "spent." I need a good night's sleep. Haven't got my CPAP yet, but I do have my oxygen still that I am wearing while sleeping. Will probably be getting the CPAP in September. Something else to look forward to. Ha.

CHRISTINA - A NORMAL HEART'S BNP WOULD BE BETWEEN 0 - 99!!!!!!!!!!!

It will fly by and it's not that much longer than a pregnancy. The most fun is always in the planning so go to it!

So what if it were, your still NORMAL at 98 and 99! My dear, I think it's time you stop looking for problems that are not there and move on with your life. ;)

Georgia -

Georgia -

are you frustrated with me??!! ;) Your post is too funny, but honest - as you are so right - I need to stop worrying.

Phyllis, I have been holding back in planning for Emma - but believe me I have been thinking a lot about how I want her room, etc. etc. We just ordered a DVD put out by National Geographic and narrated by Lisa Ling on Chinese adoption. We are going to watch it tonight. I had been holding back on watching that also.

Ross - I love it when you call me "dear." ;) You are a sweetheart. Thanks for your chastising.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Am I frustrated with you? Perhaps not you, but I'm frustrated that time is being spent on needless things and could be much better spent enjoying a life with a child and husband. It's time to let it all go. Replace all these worries with worrying about caring for the child and marriage. Life is too short as it is, why spend it all anxious on something?

I truly don't want y'all

I truly don't want y'all

to think that I sit around worrying and kvetching (there I go with the Yiddish again, Phyllis and Dick!) and moaning about my lot in life. I just wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to VR.com and feel free to state my fears and worries here with you guys.

I have gotten a new job outside the home (no more medical transcription at all for me! - yay) as an administrative assistant to a realty company here in our town with NO commute - a few minutes to work by car - I am loving the new job and it truly gets my mind off of health matters. The people I work with are really fun.

I was out in my fenced-in flower garden (if you don't put up fences, the elk will mow things down) this morning giving it a good soaking before the heat bears down on us today. I do things in life that bring me peace and serenity -I am trying to enjoy the moments.

Anyway, I can't totally blame my thyroid but I would like to - hypothyroidism causes anxiety, depression, feelings of doom and dread - I am feeling better since starting on thyroid replacement. I have always been a worrier but now I know there may have been a physical reason for it also.

Stay cool everyone - I see on the news that the whole country is having a heat wave.

And again, thanks for being my second family here on Vr.com.

Christina L

I can't imagine how high your fence is if it'll keep the elk out - they jump over ANYTHING around my mom's place. There's also a family of mule deer that consume everything the elk don't; and the chipmunks wait for all the petunias to bloom so they can mow them down.

What's the difference between 66 and 99? 33 more good reasons to get that little girl from China over here ASAP.;) :D ;)
Congrats on the good result.

Great to see the good news about your BNP and about the adoption of Emma coming a little bit closer! Not to mention your new job....Things are looking good for you! :)

to everything when I'm reading the posts here, but your recent posts have moved me. I'm so relieved for you and your husband and daughter.
May your life be blessed again and again.

Some Info on BNP

Some Info on BNP

Christina,

I went through a similar "BNP Crisis" a few months ago, and even e-mailed my cardio. I'm not bragging but he was president of the American College of Cardiology; in other words, he knows his stuff.

He told me that BNP is helpful for ER docs who need to get to the bottom of symptoms during a crisis. He said it's not helpful as a regular test, annual test, etc. because the brain makes these hormones in response to all kinds of stimuli, including female hormonal fluctuations.

Also, be careful looking at any other parameters than the one that your doc provides. Each diagnostic center uses a different range.

I've been told a gazillion times by my doc that it's all about your symptoms ... if they're in check, then try to keep your mind focused on other things. Practice visualization where you see yourself healthy, guiding your new child through college and onto her adult life while you retire and lead an active life.

All the best,

What Affects the Test

Factors that can interfere with your test or the accuracy of the results include:

Kidney disease, kidney dialysis, or a heart attack.
Some heart drugs, such as cardiac glycosides and diuretics.
Age. BNP values normally increase with age but will stay within a normal range unless heart failure is present.
