Hi everyone. I'm new to this web site and it's been great to read everybody's experiences with surgery. Having never been sick a day in my life and being diagnosed with a 8.2cm ascending aortic aneurysm was shocking to say the least. That was in Feb this year. I have a mechanical valve as well. Which means I'm new to Warfarin. I'm 50 years old and my Cardio approved a home monitoring unit for me (still waiting). Anyway, I've read much info on several new drugs the FDA have in final stages of testing to replace Coumadin / Warfarin. The drugs are not sensitive to food or drink. Warfarin is killing Happy Hour! Actually I'm happy everyday I wake up.

Does anyone have information on these new drugs??
Thanks,
Mark

I would not hold my breath:rolleyes2:. There is little doubt that someday warfarin will be replaced, but I doubt that it will be in a year or two. Based on the millions of doses used daily worldwide, there is no doubt that a lot of research is being done by "pharma" since a replacement will be worth billion$. The warfarin I take has never been sensitive to food or drink(even a Happy Hour)....my warfarin just requires consistency and/or moderation.....coupled with common sense:smile2:.....and routine INR testing:thumbup:.

Like my junior:)biggrin2:), Dick here states, it will be awhile before another drug replaces the miracle drug warfarin:angel: for valves. Maybe sooner for DVT or joint replacement, but not valves. Warfarin was discovered and has been in use for over seventy years with no serious competition. It is a powerful drug and should be respected, but what is does to blood physiology is truly amazing! It would be difficult to find a drug with the outstanding record of longtime success that even begins to compare with warfarin on pts. all over the world! This is true even though it tend to be the object of fear mongering around here which is why my posts are so rare on this forum.:rolleyes2:

Welcome to the site Mark :) There have been several discussions here on the site on this topic. I don't know if you're familiar with the search feature on the site but if you click on Advanced Search and narrow it down to the Anti-Coagulation Forum or the Advancements Forum, you may find more specific details on your topic in older threads or the archives.

Edit - I did an Advanced Search of "alternative" in the Anti-Coagulation Forum and found these, some of which I hope will be helpful to you:

Hi Bob, glad to see your post again, but what is this "junior" BS:eek2::biggrin2::wink2:. I only stay around this forum to help dispel the "fear mongering" and misunderstandings surrounding the use of warfarin:confused2:........I honestly don't understand much about the other topics discussed here.

Mark:

Don't understand why warfarin is klling your Happy Hour (unless you prefer an Extremely Happy Hour). Many of us here do enjoy drinks -- beer, wine, mixed drinks, probably shooters of tequila, jell-o shots, etc.

My surgeon told me 7 years ago that there was a replacement drug for warfarin right around the corner. That replacement Rx has not materialized, at least not for mechanical valvers.

I would venture that the majority of those who take warfarin have recently implanted joint replacements (short-term user), a-fib (could be short-term, could be extended), DVT/PE (could be either) and recent tissue valve replacements (short-term). And then there's us -- the mechanical valvers who are on warfarin until ....
AstraZeneca's Exanta (ximelagatran)-- one of the drugs touted in 2003-04 in the U.S. -- was pulled from trials in the U.S. and from markets overseas in 2006 over concerns of liver toxicity.
Something that might be tolerated for short-term use might not be suitable for extended use.

Right now, there is only one alternative that I know of still in the running and that's Dibigatran. It is NOT FOR VALVE patients and isn't even being tested in them.

Thanks to all

Thanks to all

Mark, since day one that I've been here, several drugs have been mentioned and tried. Many never made it past the development stage, Dibigatran is the most successful and just because they aren't using it in heart valve patients, doesn't necessarily mean that it won't eventually be tried. We just have to wait and be patient.
