Hello Members,

Thank you for reading this. I am working on a research project on heart valve replacement, and am looking for people in the US who received a mechanical replacement heart valve in the past 5-6 years to take our survey. (My father had mitral valve replacement several years ago and he made me aware of this site, which has been a wonderful resource for him.)

Specifically, we are trying to better understand your experience since surgery with warfarin / anticoagulation. The ultimate goal is to share these findings with surgeons, so they can better prepare patients who may need valve replacement surgery in the future. There are no sales involved, and your participation will not be shared with anyone – this study is strictly for market research purposes.

talk about slanted biased questions. FMD ... everything anyone ever learned in psychology research about what not to do with questions if you want genuine answers. But wait, you don't you want answers which fit an agenda ... classy

Hi, thank you for your input and I'm sorry you feel this way. I agree with you that there are more or less biased ways of asking questions. I suspect there are certain questions we both agree could be worded differently - these are asked this way simply to align with past academic research conducted by others.

Please know that we / I have no agenda here other than to understand the experience of people on anticoagulant therapy. I appreciate your perspective (and like I said, we may agree on some questions).

well, perhaps you should ask less leading questions, its a hallmark of a bias seeking survey. Also, make sure the questions are not biased towards being wrong (not everyone can get TAVR as one of your questions implies). Anyone with basic education in psychology can see that bias shining through in your questions.

Leading questions are survey questions that encourage or guide the respondent towards a desired answer. They are often framed in a particular way to elicit responses that confirm preconceived notions, and are favorable to the surveyor – even though this may ultimately sway or tamper with the survey data.​

Totally agree. The TAVR item you refer to is not a question, it's an agree-disagree statement. That item is to assess the potential misperceptions patients may have about who is a candidate for TAVR - I assume you would agree that this misperception (if it exists) would be important to bring to the attention of surgeons so they can properly counsel patients on their options.

In general, those agree-disagree statements are pointed to elicit are strong response where these exist (i.e., to force ratings away from the middle of the scale). However, we understand it is paramount not to miseducate on any aspects of this topic or advocate in one direction or another. We are very sensitive to this.
