Hi all!
I have traveled frequently since my surgery 3 years ago but would like some input on the time changes and coumadin. I hope I am doing it correctly. If there is only an hour difference I take my coumadin as usualy but if there is a major change I try to adjust my pills to the time at home. Is this standard procedure or should I continue to take pills at usualy time and let body adjust to time change? Am flying to LA at end of month which is a 3 hour time difference. Any advice?

Hi,
When traveling overseas, I take my dose while on the plane at my normal "at home" time. Once I arrive , I just start with my normal morning routine "over there". These time changes have ranged anywhere from 6 to 15 hours so I think you could go either way on your time adjustment as three hours is not critical. I would always check my INR on returning home ( sometimes after 6 weeks...) and it is always in range. Have a good trip!

Cookie,
I guess I'm kind of a fanatic when it comes to Coumadin.
I have made no adjustments in seven years.:)
I believe in being very consistent so I even make adjustments here at home for daylight savings time.
When I was still working my wife would page me at that time so I would take that pill.
It didn't matter if i was in a meeting, on the road ,etc.
But then I'm from Ohio so that probably explains it:D

Hi Cookie,

I also was kind of nervous about this when I went to Europe this past December. I e-mailed a VR.com friend who travels regularly and she said to just take it at the regular time when leave home (I take mine in the morning right after I get up), and when you arrive at your destination to just take it at their time. My time difference was 8 hours, and I had no problems. When I went home I did the same thing again without any problems.
Taking the meds in the morning is so much easier to remember for me. I have forgotten to take it at times, but I have all day to remember.

Have a great trip!

Hi Cookie,

Yes, take your Coumadin at the same time you normally do so at home. Travled to Hawaii twice. 6-7 hours behind us depending on the time of year. Anwway, at home I take it at 6PM. Hawaii it would be with lunch. Not a problem.

I travel all over the place and I try to take my meds including coumadin within one or two hours before or after my regular time back home. Since I take them at 8:00pm, in London that is about 2:00am (depending on daylight savings) so I take them before I go to bed which is generally pretty late. I try to stay close for consistancy sake. I just averaged my last 18 months of testing and it was 2.89 so I am not too worried.

Thanks all for the prompt replies! I will continue doing what I have always done then and adjust for the time wherever I am. I have not had a problem so far but just wanted to make sure.:)
