Impressive, but why did this occur?

based on a fully immobile disc of his mechanical bileaflet aortic valve​

(thrombosis, pannus) and could it have been fixed some other way?

Also, should that have read leaflet because the leaflets aren't discs, and this led me to have to check if it was a tilting disc (which is a disc) but then I thought "how the hell would they get that stem out..."
