Quality of life improvement and cost-effectiveness of TAVR, when compared to surgical aortic valve replacement, remain uncertain in lower risk patients. Stroke, paravalvular leak, vascular complication, bleeding, and heart block represent only a few of the key concerns in this therapy.

My surgery is a week tomorrow (Tuesday 6th August). I've got a meeting with my surgeon in a couple of days time and I'll discuss the choice with him again, but I'm reasonably sure that I'm going with a mechanical valve now. I'm feeling quite happy about that decision.

Robin Williams (the US comedian) had a replacement valve using a TAVI procedure through his groin. I saw him on a chat show talking about it:

"So, that confirms it. The quickest way to a man's heart is through his groin"

Robin Williams did not have a TAVI. More here.
