My daughter is 38 and will be going through valve replacement or hopefully repair for 2 valves. Two years ago she went into cardiac arrest due to low potassium and now has a defibrillator in case it happens again. She also has mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation that has gone from mild to severe and has to have the surgery very soon. She was suppose to go to Cleveland Clinic but her insurance wont cover something out of N.Y.S so she has a consultation at Strong Memorial in Rochester NY on the 5th of January with Dr. Peter Knight. I would like to know if any one has heard of this Doctor and if so what. Her cardiologist feels it may not be able to be done non invasive but we are hoping for this outcome I think the mitral valve and the tricuspid if that is what you call it is the valves that are of concern . Has anyone ever had this surgery for those valves done noninvasive? Or had anything to do with this hospital. It is scary to have your daughter go through this let alone remembering what happened to her 2 years ago and how traumatic it was. I don't know what to expect from the surgery. If anyone can give me any kind of information at all I would greatly appreciate it

I had mitral valve surgery for a bad chordea three years ago. They told me I had a 10% chance of repair. My surgeon used the DaVinci Robot to conduct non-invasive surgery and was successful in repairing the valve. He told me he preferred non-invasice becuase of the location of the valve. I have no knowledge of the tricuspid so I can not help you on this valve. You and your daughter are in my prayers.

Hello there. I can appreciate your concern to have your daughter undergo double valve surgery for a leaking mitral and tricuspid valve. In her age category I would hope that her valves could be repaired as we know that valve repair is much better than valve replacement in the long-term. On our website we have a list of 10 questions to ask your surgeon before proceeding with surgery. You can find those questions here: http://www.mitralvalverepair.org/content/view/88/

All the best with her care,

Yes a heartfelt welcome and looking forward to your contributions

thank your for your input. I was incorrect in having 2 valves repaired, 2 different ones that is. It is both valves in the mitral valve. I cant seem to find answers to what questions I have.such as what would the difference length times for surgery through the side and the chest doing it minimally invasive ? Is there greater risk being on the lung heart bypass machine longer and is is more dangerous doing it through the groin. can both leaflets be repaired through a minimally invasive way?I don't know how good Strong Memorial hospital is and the reputation of Dr Knight. Any help would be greatly appreciated

According to the NYS web site, Dr. Knight at Strong had 547 cases, 10 deaths, better results than average for the state.

I had my replacement of the aortic valve at the same age as your daughter. It is not very dangerous being on the heart and lung machine, it is there for a reason for the heart to still keep pumping blood to the heart and the whole body. She will be fine no matter what method or methods the surgeon will do. He will let her know of what to look forward to. You hang in there, mom, and be her cherrying section. Be brave. We are all here for you and any question you may have.

You can check out Physicians and Hospitals through them. Also if you google a Physicians name in your state, it will bring up information about him, as well as checking with the AMA. Your daughter is lucky to have such a caring Mother. Best of luck to her and you, on this journey. My prayers are with you both.
