Hi Everyone,
Garry had AVR surgery on January 4/01 at Vancouver General. He also had mitral valve repair. He developed a severe leak in Mitral valve after surgery and they debated for 5 days whether to go back in and replace Mitral valve. They decided to wait as it went from severe to moderate. He has never really felt good. Always tired, out of breath and chest pain. They have been doing echograms and on the last one - June 15th/01 they discovered a blockage on left side of the heart just above his new pig's valve. His gradient(whatever that means) has gone from 41 to 169. They have put him on 200 grams metoprolol and are going to do another echo in 4 weeks. They have consulted with Board of Specialists in Vancouver and have fwd his charts to Toronto and are awaiting advise from there. It is pretty scarey when the doctors don't know what to do. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Lula - Garry

Hi Lula and Garry-

So very sorry that Garry is having such difficulties. The fact that they have not gone in and done something appears to be a sign that Garry isn't in a life threatening situation yet. It is also a very good thing that his case is being reviewed by the Board of Specialists. It means that whatever is done will be well thought out, the right thing and definitely in his best interest. And it will probably be done by someone extremely well thought of in his/her field.

Please tell him to hang in there with all his might. Things will surely be happening very soon, and he'll be feeling better.

You both have all my hopes and good wishes for a speedy decision.

Nancy

Hi Lula-

Forgot to add this to my above post.

I had replied to you in the past regarding my husband's similar symptoms. Just wanted to let you know that Joe is scheduled for mitral valve replacement and possible repair or replacement of his tricuspid valve on July 18.

So tell Garry that I bet help for him will be coming soon.

Nancy

Nancy,
Where is your husband going for mitral valve replacement? I may want to send Garry's medical results to US for another opinion. Thx Lula

Lula,
I had a mitral repair in October... I hope that Garry recovers soon.

Sounds as though his docs have the situation covered and have called in specialists.

Take care,

Zazzy

Hi Lula-

Joe is going to our local hospital (Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York) because it coincidentally has a very fine cardio/thoracic department, within the top 100 in the country. Dr. Harry DePan is the Chief of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and is the one who will be doing the surgery. He has done two other operations on Joe. He's a very fine surgeon.

You might also want to check out Cleveland Clinic. Quite a few people have gone there.

Good luck,

Nancy
