when i left hospital the doctor prescribed moduretic (amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide) but when i was in the hospital i was taking lasix with the occasional pottasium supplement.

it seems that moduretic does not lead to pottasium depletion but does anybody know how effective it is at getting rid of retained fluid?

If it is similar to aldactone or diazide, it is not as strong as Lasix, but Lasix comes in all strengths, and I suppose so does moduretic.

My husband was on Aldactone plus Lasix for a while. That combination worked well for him for a time, but his new cardiologist removed the aldactone from his med list. So he is on Lasix only, unless he has CHF problems, then he also goes on extra Lasix and then Zaroxolyn, if things get bad.

There are specific reasons why to use one or the other, or one with the other. I can't even begin to understand all the ramifications. But I do know that during Joe's last month-long hospital stay, he had many specialists involved including a doctor of pharmacy. Interractions with many meds can be a problem, and what to use for a specific situation can be tricky.

I've been on moduretic for the last 20 years and have found it a very useful drug. It is a potassium sparing diuretic but you still have to watch it a little bit. My potassium tends to run a little on the low side while on it and last December had K-dur(a potassium supplement) added to my medications to take three times a week

It is definitely not as strong as Lasix which I also take on an as needed basis (when I am extremely short of breath and have pitting edema in my legs). The problem I get with Lasix is I feel like my head is in a barrel and sounds seem muffled. I know that is not an uncommon reaction to it. When I need Lasix, I always make sure I take my potassium as well. The last thing any of us need is an electrolyte imbalance.

In the distant past I have also been on dyazide and maxzide. I still have to really watch my diet and salt intake but even after all these years Moduretic still helps me.
