Thanks for sharing your insights on alcohol consumption while on warfarin. It's interesting to learn about the steady state concept and how alcohol affects INR levels differently than the medication itself.

Hi

and seeing the 1 message, welcome

indeed ... its basically like a hole in a bucket you put in warfarin and while its there it effects things. The warfarin gets out of the bucket by a "magic hole" that drains some things (the magic hole is called a bunch of things but lets call it as a bundle metabolism).

However the hole is only so big, so if there are other things that are queuing up to get poked out that hole there is a bit of delay. Something like traffic, and how traffic effects the maximum cars that can pass along a highway.

So warfarin can be disposed of at a rate of (say) X but if you have a bunch of alcohol in your system (or maybe you drank some grapefruit juice) then the rate is X divided by some number.

So warfarin ends up sticking around longer and your INR goes up. Sadly there is no way to know by how much what it was that you put into yourself (the booze) has slowed down the rate but we can measure INR and from that make a call about how to alter our dose.

Because we know that alcohol gets out of your system we know that you can just reduce the dose knowing that. We know that it gets out unless we do something to put it back again

Your personal experience sheds light on the individual variability in response to alcohol and medication interactions. It's crucial for each person to understand their own body's reactions and adjust accordingly. But if anyone is struggling with alcohol dependency, I recently found a detox center that offers addiction treatment programs. It might be worth considering for those seeking support on their journey to better health.
