If you're without insurance, please don't ignore health care. Make a phone call to the nearest medical society, public hospital, medical school, an AARP or other senior citizens group, etc., to find out if/when there's a health fair offering free screenings or some at greatly reduced rates.
A woman I know of has no insurance, only a part-time job (usually 16 hours a week, 24 hours during holiday periods). Had been limping for several weeks due to a blister on her big toe. She had been asked about it, said she was putting antibiotic ointment on it. When she couldn't walk any more Friday, she asked a neighbor to take her to the county hospital.
DX: Gangrene -- and diabetes. She was slapped on 2 IVs of antibiotics, hospitalized. Today her toe was amputated. Diabetes does run in her family. Brother had a stroke 2-3 years ago.
I have seen ads for free health fairs that offered diabetes, BP, cholesterol and other health screenings.
Please do yourself a favor and and those who love and care for you.
