I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I thought I'd report on the colonoscopy needs outlined by my PET scan.

I rang up a place today (after having got a referral from my GP) and went to book myself in. All went well, appointment made for a few weeks, until she asked me "I sounded young, but was I on any blood thinners" ... instant backpedaling and "we'll need you to have a consultation with our Dr prior to being able to give you an appointment."
ME: Ok, when is the next appointment
Secretary: Oh, he's very busy, we won't be able to see you till (date in Jan)
M: oh ... well ok ... (accepts this, makes appointment, hangs up, goes back to Google)

2nd place:- going well and pass the hurdle of "blood thinners" (no problem, most of our patients are on that), then asks "can I have the contact of your INR manager, for the Dr to liase with"
M: "sure, that'd be me"
S2: (bothered by this asks) are you sure that's appropriate?
M: Sure it is, I've been doing it for 5 years and my surgeon and cardio are very happy with my results ... would you like me to bring them in too?
S2: No, it will be fine, well the Dr will have to call you back to discuss the appropriate protocol. I don't know what the current protocol is for suspension of warfarin before the procedure....
M: oh, that's OK, I do, I go off warfarin 2 days prior to the test. I will test my INR before coming and report that to the Dr
S2: (sounding dubious) well I'll just ask the Dr, as I don't think that's right ...
{Music on hold}
S2: Hello? Yes, err, that's exactly what the Dr just told me. So we'll see you on the (date)
M: Excellent, looking fwd to it ... Bye

the point?

Advocate for yourself and shop around if dicked around.

When you booked the appointment the booking clerk wouldn't know if you are going to have polyps removed during the colonoscopy, hence the question about blood thinners in case you do.
totally agree ... it was a valid question. But all the other stuff was just amusing to me. Like trying to delay me for months while the Doctor found time to discuss it with me ... like telling me warfarin was "heavy drugs" ... unconsciously implanting the "fear" ...

Personally I despise the NYTimes ... every article I've read has been ... well shall we say slanted and at the very least "cherry picking" of points.

I find a lot of the medical profession, and clerks/secretaries, just don’t appreciate that some patients really do know what they’re talking about, know a lot about their conditions and a lot about their medications, probably more than them because we specialise in ourselves. It can be more than a little irritating.
