This guy followed us into our garage last night.
Never heard of such an insect before.
This is a picture of one, the little guy we had was much larger, a wingspan of about seven inches.
It's called a hummingbird moth.

Chris calls them a hawk moth. They fill the same ecologic niche that hummingbirds fill, and we have tons of them in Idaho. My cats love to try to catch them. We may all be thankful for them some day if the honeybee can't make enough recovery. They are fairly good pollinators. The bumblebee, so-called H-bee (a fly camouflaged as a bee), yellow jackets, carpenter bees, sweat bees, and other pollinators native to North America may all become more important.

Nice Night in Idaho,
-Laura
