    Back home

My daughter is almost 2. She's 21 pounds. I was told no lifting more than ten pounds for 6-8 weeks. Today was the first day I picked her up and held her on my hip. I'll be eight weeks on Thursday. It was virtually painless but I think I'm going to hold off another couple of weeks before doing it...

    Numbness ? is it nomad?

I am seven weeks out. No numbness by incision, but in right thumb all the way up arm to above right breast. Also in right inner thigh. I think both are from my two extra heart lung machine incisions by my groin and right clavicle. I had no numbness with my other OHS 7.5 years ago.

    bra after surgery?

I asked the same question a couple of months ago just before my surgery too. Any bra was uncomfortable for long periods of time for several weeks. I'm seven weeks out now and have been wearing a bra daily for 1-2 weeks now. I bought this one - closes at the front and has a ton of support. I used...

How long for On-X valve card?

Hi all, I had both a St. Jude's and an On-X valve installed on March 20th. The St.Jude's card came very quickly - maybe two weeks after surgery. I still haven't got my On-X card yet. Does anyone remember how long theirs took? Thanks

What type of valve is best for me?

I'm a 36 year old female and had my aortic and mitral replaced last month with mechanical valves. I had my mitral done when I was 28 with a tissue valve because I wanted more children. I had decided on mechanical before I met with my surgeon this time because my first surgery was very tough and...

    Very emotional

Thanks all so much for the perspective and hugs! It's a tough old slog but I do know I'll get there. My mom suggested picking three things that made me happy each day. I like your idea of charting too Steve.

    Very emotional

So I'm five weeks post op today. I was rehospitalized twice since surgery, once for a blood clot and hematoma for six days and then for a suspected (was clear) pulmonary embolism. In the middle of all this my nearly two year old had a fever for nine days and two febrile seizures. I kept it...

    Discreetely checking your pulse

I can now. Five weeks post mechanical placements. Guess I'll just do that now :)

    Discreetely checking your pulse

I'm with you on this one. I've been known to put my fingers on my carotid during meetings if I'm experiencing palpitations.

    Five days after surgery

Delighted everything went well. Breathe, breathe, breathe and cough. Norco 20 was my friend at night for weeks (apparently I'm a pain wuss). Coughing is still very sore (5 weeks) without meds. I'm off it mostly though

    Afib ?

I have had a fib several times over the last nine years. I can feel the palpitations and know what's wrong immediately. I usually wait 15 minutes before going to the ER to see will it stop. I used to get an hour or two where I'd still feel fine and then start feeling dizzy and back pain. Since...

    Foot swelling

I'm five weeks post op tomorrow. I've had on compression stockings almost 24/7 since a week after surgery because of a clot. Yesterday and today I was slightly less diligent and had the stockings off for 4-5 hours after a shower. Both days my left foot was slightly swollen. I presume it's been...

    Groin Lump/Pain?

I had a huge lump (size of hand) 5 days post op. By day six I was in agony. I was readmitted for a clot (unrelated to groin bleed) but kept in because of the pain from it. My op was March 20th, so five weeks tomorrow. The lump is about the size of a golf ball now and painless. My groin incision...

Back pain in bed and huge groin hematoma

extraordinary - I've been where you are are. I had my first surgery at 28 years old when my daughter was 6 months old. It was tough and I had a few really crappy complications immediately post op. Honestly though it's good you're doing it now My kids are now 7, 5 and 21 months and its really...

Complications but made it to the other side

Azzurri - so sorry you went through all of that. another OHS is just horrible. I was readmitted twice since surgery but finally got out yesterday again. No big deals here - well blood clot and suspected pulmonary embolism which turned out not to be. I thought I might have passed you in the hall...

Question for those who have had both Tissue and Mechanical

I had a tissue valve for 7.5 years. I had it and another valve replaced with mechanical valves 2.5 weeks ago. So far the only difference is the clicking. I notice it but it doesn't bother me. I've been on Coumadin for life for three years (runs of a-fib) anyway so this time around choosing...

All the best for tomorrow Heartstream. We'll see you on here feeling great really soon

is mechanical valve that noisy ?

I only hear one click per beat. Maybe I should go around the ward to find someone who got one put in and we can compare :)

Hospital the Night Before and Blood?

I'm in the US. For my mitral valve replacement seven years ago, I gave blood twice in the four weeks before surgery. This time (aortic and mitral) I asked about it and he said it would only make my symptoms worse. Same doctor, same hospital. I'm not sure if it's because of valve type, change in...
