Just an update...It's been almost 3 months since my son's stroke due to infective endocarditis. He has finished 6 weeks of IV antibiotics and current blood cultures show no bacteria growing. But he'll do another blood culture next week. He has moved home and taken semester off of collegweek...

    Minnesota valve replacement surgeons?

Our son just had his second surgery on Dec. 1,2016. Dr. Joseph Dearani at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester did his surgery. (A challenge, as he had infective endocarditis!) but the surgery went very well, thanks to Dr. Dearani!

Blood clot in spleen, now leg pain!

One thing I learned....blood cultures are typically grown only 5 days. These rare type of bacterial will take longer to grow, so if you or a loved one even just suspect endocarditis, please insist that they keep and grow the blood culture for 2 weeks to be sure! What a simple thing could save...

Blood clot in spleen, now leg pain!

Update: I knew something was wrong for over a month...but all tests were negative. Now, I'm so sad to say he had a major stroke this week! They think it's an infection on heart valve or body rejecting the valve. He's got a lot of Drs. Working on his care at mayo, Rochester. Once it's safe...

Blood clot in spleen, now leg pain!

Our 20 year old son had his aortic valve replace with a tissue valve about 1 1/2 years ago. About 5 months ago, he had a blood clot that killed half of his spleen, now he is on Coumadin. This past week and a half he has severe leg calf pain for no apparent reason. He went to ER and had ultra...

Infarct of the spleen after valve replacement

Update: blood culture was negative. They did a TEE echo, 1 st one he ever had. It showed a "wad" on one of the leaflets. It does not effect the function of the leaflet and it does not move. Perhaps it's scar tissue, we were told and maybe a clot formed or fell of of that. Everything else...

Infarct of the spleen after valve replacement

Thank you all for your thoughts and concern. He has a tissue valve. It was his choice, he wanted to be able to play sports yet and not have to take blood thinners. So no, he is not on blood thinners. I'm assuming that may change now... He will have a TEE ultra sound on Monday and the blood...

(Our son, 19 has severe BAV. We have been told surgery is very close, but no set date. He will have stress test and evaluate this spring. We are preparing for surgery this summer.) BUT, his 14 yr. old brother had an echo a year ago and was told no BAV. But recently had an EKG since his...

    Night sweats?

Our son is complaining of night sweats the last 3 nights and not being able to sleep. He's not voicing any other symptoms. Can this be a symptom of his AVS? He is on the severe borderline. Just can't think of why else he's having night sweats.

    Loss of appetite a symptom?

Our son felt good today, and back to school. He said he's been noticing a metal taste in his mouth lately. He's got a slight cough with phlegm, so maybe it's allergies? They say allergies will be bad this spring. It will be interesting how he feels the day after his next game....if he is...

How can a loved one best help someone with BAV in the waiting room?

What advice can you give a loved one from your experience? What did your loved one do or say that helped you as the patient? what did they do or say that didn't help? I try not to talk about it unless my son brings it up first, but I don't want to seem like I'm ignoring it. Although lately...

    Loss of appetite a symptom?

I talked with his cardiologist. He feels it's a virus and highly unlikely to be an infection. Any sign of a temperature or any other changes, and we will take him to Dr. tho.

    Teenager in severe status

Our son got a cardio. Second opinion. He said they will replace part of aorta too! 1st we heard that. He says no baseball and then describes in some graphic detail how they will do surgery! We were mad about that. Just freaks him out more. I feel no need to explain to the patient, when...

    Teenager in severe status

Hello everyone, His FP said it was anxiety. Since he was not " physically" active at the time and it did get better as the days went on. This Dr. Thinks he should have surgery this summer! He wants him to have it done while he's in good physical shape, and thus be stronger to heal. We agreed...
