    Cough up blood anyone?

Hiya All, About 5 weeks ago I coughed up some mucus that was mostly blood, the size of a large pea. Not like clear/yellow with a streak of blood, but mostly blood. Dark red-ish, fun hey. Anyway did nothing for a few days as I was on holiday/vacation, was just about to get on the plane before...

Heart rate when exercising post AVR

Hiya, I'm trying to get fit, I love cycling and always have. I've been using the exercise bike to get my stamina and fitness improved before taking my bike out on the roads. I'm running at the same intensity that I used before the Op, ie. 80 pedal revoultions per min, same level (3). However my...

    One year today

Wow, time flies. I think this time last year I was probably getting wheeled into OR. You know when you have those strange conversations with the medical staff as they try to take your mind off it "....nice weather isn't it.....", "....so where are you going on holiday this year.....". Scary...

    Scar pain grrrrr

Okay folks, need some vr.org counsel. I have a nice keloid or hypertrophic scar. And I get lotsa pinching type pain from it, which is quite alarming as chest pain equals "run to ER" in my book. I'm 99% certain its scar pain. Anyone else have this? And anyone got any magic cream to stop it...

    Cardio checkup tomorrow, yikes!

Well, 8 months after the main event I'm back to see my Cardio tomorrow for a check-up. I've had what I think is a great recovery and feel fine. Of course your mind runs away and comes up with a list of every possible nasty that he could find, so I'm a little worried. Anyway, wish me luck. Ade.

    Wheres that leak...?

This amused me today. Had the plumber round to do some work in our bathroom, and when he was done I was standing in the bathroom with him. And he's looking round like a mad thing saying he can hear a leak but can't see where. After a couple of minutes I put him out of his misery and said it was...

    Swimming pool and "the scar"

Okay, I'm off on holiday soon aka vacation for you folks over the pond. So you're lounging round the pool, showing off your scar to the rest of the world. What's the best explanation you've ever come up with to explain away the scar when some 8 year old points at you and says "what happened to...

Increased HR and beta blocker reduction

Hi All, I'm reducing my beta blocker (Atenolol) to zero hopefully, after being on 75mg/day for almost 3 months. As it stands I've been on 50mg for 5 days with no ill effects, and will be dropping to 25mg in another 2 days, and then on that dose for a week etc... Just wondering if there is a...

Using a heart rate monitor when cycling

Tried this for the first time today, and I have to say it was quite a scary experience. I cycle lots, well did before surgery. I've never had any appreciation of what my heart rate is doing when cycling. I'm just finishing rehab now and if my rate exceeds 110 in rehab its a miracle, its all...

High heart rate - how long for ?

Hi All, Pre-surgery my resting heart rate was low 60's, post surgery its being held down by beta blockers, so is still low 60's. However I've noticed that if I check my heart rate in the morning before taking beta blockers it's 95-ish. Then I take BB's and after an hour or so all is well...

    Active lifestyle and Warfarin

Hi All, a general question. Does an active lifestyle equal a higher Warfarin dose ? I've been on 5mg since surgery, and my INR has always been in range. Now that I'm up and about, walking miles instead of staying indoors, I'm finding my INR dropping and dose has been upped to 6 and 5 on...

    Getting off Atenolol

Hi All, I'm almost 5 weeks out of surgery and had a follow up today to see if all is well, and I have been discharged from the Cardiac Surgeon, yay! I'm on 75mg Atenolol and asked about getting off it and was told to taper it off, ie. one week at 50, one week at 25. I also have Asthma and my...

    Heart Rate Monitor

Hi Folks, I'll be 3 weeks out of surgery tomorrow. Just had a mad moment and went shopping on Amazon for a watch style HRM and have gone for a Garmin Forerunner 50. Ok its a little early to be considering using this but I'm mad keen to get on the bike at 6 weeks (only 3 to go, yay!). Just...

    I'm home!

Well that was one of life's little adventures. Was admitted March 18th for surgery on the 19th for Aortic valve swap. I am now the proud owner of a 29mm St Jude mechanical valve. No complications that I'm aware of. I was quite ready to go home after 6 days, but they wanted to hang onto me to...

I have a date for AVR (well almost)

Hi All, I've not posted since my initial barrage of questions on having been diagnosed as needing an AVR. Anyway, had a CT scan yesterday. Phone call today from hospital asking if I'm available for surgery on March 19th. Silence on the phone from me, followed by "Yes". I should point out I've...

    UK warfarin charges

As someone who is up for an aortic valve swap, and is leaning towards a mechanical one......do us UK based folks pay for Warfarin. ie do we pay x amount per month (whatever prescription charges are) or can we get the NHS to cover the cost. And if we pay, can someone in the UK suggest a ball...

    Bike rides after AVR

Hi Folks, I quite enjoy bike rides, I do a 14 mile round trip (22km) to work. However I'm due an aortic valve swap at some point in the future. How long do you reckon it would be after surgery before I could get back on the bike. Apprecitate it'll be a case of take it easy and build from there...

CTA(?) scan prior to aortic valve surgery

Hi All, I have been diagnosed as needing my Aortic valve replaced. I've been a little shellshocked to say the least. Turned up at the hospital with a murmur and was expecting to be told to take some pills and go home. So am a little shocked to be needing OHS. I've had an Echo and Angiogram...
