    Ross Young

How sad, I don't check in much these days so missed this. He was a great help when going through AVR (as was everyone else here). God bless his family, sorry for your loss.

High Blood Pressure after Valve Replacement

I guess you're out of condition post surgery. With cardiac rehab and exercise I bet it will come down.

    question for british valvers

Hi Neil, Liverpool here, mine was done at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Cardio annual check up last week, all ok. Didn't even do an ECG, just listened, did BP. He's requested an Echo which is next week I think. Next check-up Feb 2013.

less common side effects of severe aortic valve leak

Don't think I had any symptoms, as far as I was concerned I was normal. What drove me to see the doctor was a racing heart rate, which lasted for maybe an hour. Saw my GP and he said "hmmmm....you have a heart murmur", and the rest is history. However thinking back, I can recall episodes of fast...

Age 43 - Active person - No health issues - Any reason NOT to go mechanical?

I was 41 and went with a mechanical, though I didn't get a choice. Though if I did have a choice I'd have gone with a mechanical. Anyway, I'm pretty active and it's fine for me. I don't downhill ski though, and I guess you'd not want to crash too many times when doing that on Warfarin ? With a...

How much difference can valve type make in athletic performance?

Well I have a 29mm mechanical and I can cycle as fast (faster?) as I could pre-surgery. I'm no athelete but I can fly past most folks on the bike. Gotta remember I had a big leak before surgery so that didn't help. Maybe the blood flow rate is less than a native valve, but who cares, A couple of...

question: do I still have a 'heart condition'?

You don't have a heart condition. You did, but it's been fixed. However for the purposes of travel insurance etc you have to declare the valve swap and they bump up your premium accordingly.

Good call, shall do. We have space for notes on our INR test forms like '...have you had any unexpected bruising/bleeding etc...." - I shall fill it in. Ade

    Cough up blood anyone?

Hiya All, About 5 weeks ago I coughed up some mucus that was mostly blood, the size of a large pea. Not like clear/yellow with a streak of blood, but mostly blood. Dark red-ish, fun hey. Anyway did nothing for a few days as I was on holiday/vacation, was just about to get on the plane before...

Ross you are the MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly I've missed all this. Why the need to reduce the number of admins/moderators to one ? For me Ross is/was the public face of this forum. Hank on the other hand has a rather lower profile for me. Appreciate thats it's Hank's baby, but there are God knows how many other vBulletin sites...

    Oink to tick

I cycle lots, and go tick-tick The mechanical valve/warfarin hasn't slowed me one little bit. Plus I don't wear a helmet, naughty me. It's a generation thing. All the kids nowadays wear 'em, but us kids who grew up in the '70's never used them as kids, and don't now. Having said that I bought...

What was your recovery time before you returned to work? Did you have complications.

3 months out for me, felt I could have gone back a lot earlier, but why rush ? I was getting paid to sit at home.

Choosing either the On-X or St. Jude Regent...opinions?

I remember feeling cold when I started on Warfarin, now I don't notice. Anyway I missed all this discussion. I have a Regent, 29mm too, hehe As for the INR discussion, I was told by the surgical folks to maintain 2.5 to 3.0. Then I saw the anti-coagulation clinic nurse and she said no way on...

    Metropolol ween down.

Don't know about metropolol but I had a similar experience with Atenolol. Think higher pulse rates are par for the course when dropping down. Just let your body adjust to the lower dose before you drop again. I was on 25/mg for what seemed like forever after dropping 70 to 50 to 25. It's hard to...
