    TIA & Aneurysm Questions

Hi, Yes, I had several TIA's for the first 2 or 3 months after AVR. My symptoms... one eye had a "window shade" effect that covered over half of the eye. It was like someone had dimmed the lights. Only lasted for a minute or so. My cardio said it was probably from AVR surgery. I can't answer...

    Warfarin - Weight Gain?

Over the years I've heard warfarin blamed on about everything. But no, it didn't cause you to gain 20 lbs. Try increasing your walk to 3 miles every day and complete it within at least 45 minutes to an hour. And cut out all sugar. Have you asked your doctor? I know for a fact that cruising...

Sleep Apnea Test -- What a joke!

Norma Jean, sorry you had such a bad time with the testing. I had the test locally a few years ago. The tech was very professional and I didn't have much problem going to sleep. It was some trouble having to get up twice to pee with all the wires. The test went well, we reviewed it all the next...

    Alaskan Cruise

Glenda, we did the Inside Passage in 07 out of Juneau for 7 days. (also our 50th A) Small ship, only 220 passengers. Being smaller it could go in closer that the big ones. Was small but cost more than the floating hotels. But the ticket also included all land excursions. Empress of the North...

mechanical or tissue valve and an active lifestyle?

I had stenosis for ten years before surgery was required, had no symptoms. My surgeon and cardiologist both highly recommended mechanical for my young age of 56. Even with my history of a bleeding duodenal ulcer. They both said, if at all possible!, you don't want but one heart surgery. They...

    Niacin

I was put on niacin in 1976 for elevated triglycerides (1500), normal cholesterol. I didn't like the flushing and it didn't work too good for me. I was switched to gemfibrozil, brand name Lopid. Been on it ever since except for a period of about 5 years after AVR, during that time triglycerides...

The INR ratio, What is the denominator?

I use the Inratio2 but can't answer your question for I have mine set to display only INR. I never paid any attention to PT number back before I got a monitor. I'm sure Hemosense tech will answer your question. Also I don't get lab test.

The St. Jude valve: Analysis of thromboembolism, warfarin-related hemorrhage, and sur

Sounds like you are in bad need of a good GI doctor and some warfarin education. I had black tarry stools the year before taking warfarin. Had no stomach pain what so ever. I always thought my stomach was made of cast iron. The GI doctor, using the endoscopy found a large duodenal ulcer...

St Jude Mechanical valves: Are there different models?

Although I had complications from the surgery and a 20 day hospital stay I was completely off morphine before leaving the hospital. I was still feeling terrible and required a wheel chair from the limousine to the plane. (wife was trying to cheer me up by using a limousine from the hospital to...

Norma Jean, I'm so sorry for the bad news. Dr. Duncan was my surgeon. He was first recommended to me by my cardiologist in Odessa. I met Dr Duncan for the first time the day before surgery. I wish you the very best and you will be in my prayers. God Bless.

    authorization

I'd ask what's the reason and if they still refuse I'd find a new physician. My previous cardio wasn't over joyed with home testing. I was his first patient that home tested. After problems with his wife about billing to Medicare I soon found another cardio that thinks home testing is great. He...

    AVR selection

I too, don't get your thing about "royal pain". Talk about pain, complications from heart surgery could well be called that. Not taking warfarin. I was almost your age, healthy and very active. Only problem for 10 years was a noisy valve that wasn't causing any symptoms. Back then tissue...

St Jude Mechanical valves: Are there different models?

I had a 550 mile flight to the hospital of my choice. Had complications from surgery and my hospital stay was extended to 20 days. I was in a wheel chair at the airport and the flight home wasn't about an hour. Wasn't feeling well and glad the flight was no longer. It would have been very...
