    10 year anniversary second AVR

10 Years with mechanical valve, after only 6 with porcine. Also had 50th wedding anniversary. (Next milestone I hope to meet in 3 years is 10 years cancer free.) Thank you to all the people who continue to participate on this forum!

    Continuing warfarin through wrist surgery

A totally unscientific report that may be useful. Two weeks ago I fell and broke my right wrist badly enough that it required surgery. I was worried about bridging because of a near-disaster after mastectomy several years ago. The surgeon said he did not stop warfarin for this surgery because...

    Eight years for second valve

Second AVR after first (porcine) valve lasted only 6 years. This one has carried me past 70 and headed toward 75.

6th anniversary of 2d aortic valve replacement

I've now had a mechanical valve as long as mr piggy lasted. At 72, I'm getting a little creaky, but had a 6 mile hike today.

    2d anniversary for 2d AVR

Hello to anyone who remembers me! Actually the anniversary was February, but we were busy then. I don't check in as often as I used to. Partly because it feels like my experiences are either out of mind or out of date. Before and after the first AVR it was never out of my mind. There was...

Husband joining me on warfarin merry-go-round

Is this another meaning for couples therapy? Leg pain we assumed was muscle strain (see below) was finally diagnosed as a blood clot after his foot swelled last night. He's had two Lovenox shots and started on coumadin. We still have appointments ahead of us before we know whether this is...

    Has anyone heard from lynlw?

I've seen posts from young people, and then realized she didn't respond like she used to. I checked her profile and it seems she was last active Mar 2014. I hope it's that Justin became stable and they got busy with other things.

First anniversary for Aortic valve #2

The year went by so quickly. I'm doing very well, hiking, traveling, gardening, and relearning bicycling. (At 68, it was kind of funny explaining to my PCP that the sore on my knee was from falling off my bike.) Jan 30 would have been 7th for the first valve, but it didn't last that long. I...

Warfarin users: did you get a call from your cardio about recalled Alere strips?

And if so, when? Member Protimenow posted on the Home Anticoagulation forum, but the recall really affects those being tested by physicians or clinics. This letter was sent to doctors on April 16...

    Warfarin woes

So far, for me, warfarin therapy hasn't just been as easy as taking a pill. Now starting week 9 after surgery, my INR is still not in range. It has varied within a 1.4-1.7 range. Last week the cardiologist prescribed thyroid bloodwork (don't have results yet), but I feel that is just a guess...

    Home after AVR redo!

I came home Sunday afternoon, after Wednesday surgery. As others have said, the second seemed easier, maybe partly because I sort of knew what to expect, though the surgeon said not easier for him. He's a man of few words, one of those 'the past is past' people, so I'm not sure I'll find out...

    Surgery postponed

I got a call just past noon yesterday (Thurs) that my Friday surgery is postponed until next Wednesday. It seems the emergency surgery had already occurred, but Wed is the next day a bed will be available. I always thought it would be distressing, and now I know first-hand.

    6th and last

...for this little piggy valve. Bear with me if you've read my other posts about upcoming re-do, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to use that title. I'm getting a new valve next Friday and restarting the anniversary clock.

Redo AVR scheduled for Feb 7

...6 years, one week and one day after first AVR. Surgeon Luis Rosado, Tucson Medical Center. I'm feeling pretty good about it, will be glad to get it over with and get on with my life. I had to cancel two planned trips, but we're still going to Yosemite in June! Last time was several months...

    Back to the waiting room

I've known this was coming for a couple of years. Mean gradients for my Medtronic Mosaic valve started off in the mid-20's, but since they were stable and didn't affect daily life and my cardio said they were within normal range, I didn't worry too much. In the last two years gradients have...

    5 years (+2months)

On my real 5 year date, I feared I'd be posting something quite different, as my valve appears to be wearing out faster than I'd hoped. My mean gradient with this valve started off high normal--23, 21, 22 the first three years, then 36, 43, 44 for the last 3 6-month checkups. It's also...

    Walked half-marathon in Las Vegas

My husband, a friend and I walked the half-marathon at the Rock'n'roll Las Vegas event. I was at the end of about every category, but finished on time and without injury. I've never done anything like this before.

TSA patdown because of chest wires

The agent was very polite, and she just patted around my collar bones a little. I'm just annoyed that it happened--after 4 years of going through all sorts of imaging with no hitch. It seems to me that a row of staples on the sternum of a gray-haired person shouldn't be any more remarkable (or...

    Year Four

Still feeling good. I haven't been around the forums as much. We sold our house in VA, drove 3 pets across the country to AZ, found out almost immediately that our lovely greyhound had lymphoma, parted with her after a couple of months of decline. Despite the sad start, we are loving it here...
