    29 years today!!

Twenty nine years ago today, I had my mitral valve replaced with the new St. Jude valve. As I've stated before, I was one of the "test subjects" since it hadn't been approved by the FDA yet.:eek2: But, I'm so thankful my surgeon encouraged me to sign those papers (felt like I was signing my...

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I haven't been coming by as much lately...traveling and taking care of grandkids. I guess if I can still do those two things, I must still be in pretty good shape for 58! Oh my...putting my age in print makes me feel OLD!!! Linda

    Anybody know Louisville, KY?

I grew up in Louisville, and my parents, brother, and many, many relatives and friends still live there. I go back home every 3-4 months. I grew up in the West End of Louisville. When I was a senior in high school, my parents moved to the East End and still live in their home there. I...

Mitral valve repair/replacement for those over 80

Hi Sabine, I just wanted to let you know that my father had an aortic valve replacement a year ago May at the age of 87. He had suffered a heart attack and while they were in doing 6 or 7 bypasses (can't recall the exact number) they replaced his aortic valve. He was out of the hospital and...

    Why bridging?

I think I've also read that there is more of a problem of not bridging in people with mechanical heart valves in the mitral position.

    colonoscopy and heparin

I have a nursing background, so I'm pretty sure I'm injecting it properly. I lay down, swab with alcohol and let the alcohol dry really good, hold a piece of belly fat between my thumb and finger, inject the solution, don't rub the area after injecting. I also don't get the air bubble out...

    colonoscopy and heparin

I have a question. I know that some on here have their colonoscopies done while on coumadin but this has to do with those of us who do the bridging. Years ago I would use the Lovenox injections and have always had horrible hematomas in my abdomen from them. The last time was the last straw...

next step for joey in controlling afib; pls keep fingers crossed!

Sylvia, I'm jumping on here late but wanted you to know that I suffered from Afib for many years. Tambacor was the drug that worked for me for almost 13 years, but when it stopped doing it's job, then I tried just about every other drug there was except for the Amiodarone. I never took it...

    REAL pet peeves

Our yellow Lab, Abby is truly an angel. She's 6 years old and never ever chewed anything other than her toys and even with them she has a really "soft mouth". She follows Steve and me wherever we go in the house and is our constant companion. The ONLY problem we have with Abby is that she...

    length of mechanical valve

My St. Jude mechanical is still going strong at 28 and a half years. It was put in in 1981. I'm counting on no problems with the tissue around the valve, blood clots, infection, etc. LINDA

    Anyone else worried or concerned???

I never worried when all I had was my St. Jude valve, but once the defibrillator/pacemaker went in, I've only done the patdowns. They're not that bad. LINDA
