Need Help Choosing! 14 Questions For Those With Mechanical Valve + Warfarin

My answers are the same as most of the others. I have the OnX, 3 months, I feel 100%. I am 58. I had thought that if I was 65 I would have gotten the bio valve but in retrospect that would have been a mistake IMHO. Mechanical is tried and true and lasts. All these other options just reduce your...

Mechanical Valvers! Tell me about your travel experiences

I am really glad I did the mechanical and don't have to have another aortic valve surgery. Just go into it with a positive attitude and then go get your skis and scuba stuff and go kick a$$. I have had an Onx mechanical for only a little less than 3 months so I dont have the experience of some...

New Here - AVR on 10/19/22

Hi Mike. I had a mechanical aortic valve on 10/14, so it’s been 3 weeks. Beforehand I read that there would be progress for the first few months but not linear, so two steps forward one step back. I had it super easy for the first two weeks and the third week I have struggled. Mentally it is...

    AVR is done. Going home.

I was very nervous. But you just go through it. A few days later I am already forgetting the hard parts.

Recovery of Ejection Fraction post AVR

Thanks T. That is very useful too. I have not had to be on many prescriptions previously so it is just old thinking on my part. If they want me on a dose of it long term, fine. I am learning. It is good to have online info but this is one area where it might have given me a concern about...

Recovery of Ejection Fraction post AVR

you said you are on metoprolol 7.5 2x/day. I am on 25mg 2x/day six days out. I am hoping they reduce it. I feel pretty good but one thing is a lot of the day I feel my heart beating very strongly and a bit fast, like 75-80 bpm. I am wondering if this is just how it is in the early days or if it...

    AVR is done. Going home.

Thank you good advice. No I am not self managing it. We are using a visiting nurse to do the tests now and I will start using the Coumadin lab next week. I am using all the resources they have! I suspect I will self manage it some time in the future. But not in a hurry.

    AVR is done. Going home.

I did actually have symptoms. I was worried about it. But I had a stress echo that was “severe” and a regular echo by another guy that was “moderate”. These tests are looking through a glass darkly. So a cardiologist with good experience is important. I also got pictures. I feel lucky after...

    AVR is done. Going home.

Yeah the doctors seemed surprised they were letting me out after 72 hours but everything was in place, and it was their call. MY ADVICE: Get off the pain meds as soon as you can. I learned this through a number of knee surgeries. Oxycodone is a bad drug. Fentanyl is hard. The pain from this...

    AVR is done. Going home.

I had an On-X valve put in on Friday morning and now it’s Monday afternoon and I’m going home. Great job by the Maine Medical Center. I was in the ICU for one night and the cardiac care ward for two. It turned out that my valve was worse than expected and my aorta was fine and didn’t need...

Thanks. Rescheduled for Friday. When they remove the drainage tubes do the put stitches in or just tape it up or something?

    New here

LOL. No hasn’t happened yet. 2 weeks ago it got delayed at the day before, and last Thursday it got cancelled the day of, when I had been sitting there with IVs in my arm for 6 hours. Apparently the ICUs are at capacity and emergency bypass surgeries are being shuttled between hospitals. Anyway...

I have a phd in philosophy. I didn’t learn it from memes and YouTube. I never said I was terrified. And now you are saying I have mental problems. You and your long posts about nothing are going on ignore. You can take your unqualified medical advice (telling people who are already anxious to...

    Delayed.

Thanks. I haven’t gotten a call yet but there is a message in the online system indicating it may be this Friday. This time I will do the shaving part myself. Last week it was done by some dude from the hospital and we were both talking loudly about football and hockey the whole time like...

    Delayed.

it is a large hospital with a top program. But yeah, it doesn’t feel good. What I think happened is because of the prior cancellation they tried to get me in asap and tucked me in for surgery this time in the afternoon as his second case of the day at 12:30 PM, and had me show up at 8am. but...

This is BS and offensive. Telling people facing open heart surgery to embrace horror and moral terror and meditate on suffering and the fact that you are going to die is absolutely frigging ridiculous.
