Passed my 27 year mark in September. Fell off a ladder once and broke my arm, just a few bruises, nothing major. I did bruise my legs up riding the roller coaster at New York, New York in Vegas a few years ago. I am sure it didn't have anything to do with the amount of alcohol I had that day...

    56 years clicking!!!

That is awesome. I am coming up on only 27 years in September on my MVR.

Migraine aura anyone? Or does the cheese stand alone?

Got my first while still in the hospital after MVR. Headache is usually minor. I found the frequency went way down after I started using flonase. Since the sinuses and eyes are kinda connected made me wonder if related.

    Heart problems for grandson

Things are progressing nicely for my grandson. They removed his chest tube and he is off the ventilator breathing on his own now. Can't say enough good things about how great the staff at University of Minnesota Childrens Hospital are. Thanks again everyone for the thoughts and prayers.

    Heart problems for grandson

The surgery went well. Looks like a balloon expansion of the narrowing in the arch took care of it for now. They fixed the TGA and guess there was another artery they did too. Although I doubt he will have much of a scar as he grows we can compare war wounds when he gets older. Thank you for all...

    Heart problems for grandson

Monday is surgery day. Evan is doing ok. They did the balloon procedure to help mix the oxygenated blood in his heart. There is another complication that came up though. They discovered he also has coarctation of the aorta (narrowing). They will try to fix that when they do the TGA but is does...

    Heart problems for grandson

Thursday is the big day. They are hoping they can wait a couple days before they do surgery so baby can eat and stuff. Baby is over 7 pounds so lungs should be fully developed. Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers.

    Not a fun Christmas

I had the delight of coming down with a bad case of pneumonia before Christmas. Went to the ER on Thursday week before and the sent my home with antibiotics. Things got worse so went back Saturday before and they admitted me. The antibiotics did not seem to be helping so they added a heavy...

How has surgery had an impact on family members

My MVR was back in 1996 so the kids were only 6 and 8. My wife took the brunt of stress when my valve repair failed after 2 days. That happened on a Saturday and the OR's in the hospital were full operating on gunshot wounds I heard. The repair was blocking some flow so my lungs filled with...

    Bloody nose

Ditto on the vaseline. I load up a qtip and rotate it around. I have had bleeds on trips to arizona and vegas. I am sure the vegas one had nothing to do with the extra alcohol increasing my INR. ;). Things like eyes and nasal passages dry out more the older we get so that doesn't help either.

    Heart problems for grandson

Good news from the last ultrasound. They are no longer seeing a septal defect. So looks like just surgery for the TGA. Thank you for your prayers.

    Heart problems for grandson

Thank you for the prayers. Stories like yours help keep us optimistic for a good outcome. The doctors are from the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital which are some of the best in Minnesota along with Mayo.

    Heart problems for grandson

My son and his wife are expecting another baby. They discovered during an ultrasound that he has transposition of the great arteries. He also has a large ventricular septal defect. The plan is to keep a close eye on things and then perform surgery right after delivery. He is due early February...

To Bridge or not to Bridge

I read a couple more publications of the same kind of liver enzyme elevation from heparin types of medication. I appears that none of the cases were found to have any permanent liver damage. Once the lovenox is stopped the levels return to normal like they did for me 10 years ago. I think...

10 year's with questions i need to ask. Age 34

I understand the anxiety. When I was 35 I almost didn't make it when my mitral valve repair failed after 4 days. I got to the point where I could not talk about what I went through without tearing up. When I saw my cardiologist for my first 1 year follow up he recommended I talk to my primary...

To Bridge or not to Bridge

Thanks for the info. Am I correct in stating that a mechanical mitral valve would have a greater risk for thromboembolism than a mechanical aortic valve at INR of less than 1.4? Since I do not self manage my INR at this time it would also put me at more risk not knowing exactly what my INR has...

Anyone had 3 valve replacement surgeries?

I have only had 2 but they were only 4 days apart. The first one was a mitral valve repair. I had hoped to avoid the lifetime of warfarin by having the repair done. Repair has probably advanced a lot since 1996. I had made it out of the ICU and was in a regular room on the heart floor when I...

To Bridge or not to Bridge

Saw the cardiologist and he is ok with not bridging. INR was 2.7 yesterday and wants me to stop 4 days prior ( so last dose will be tomorrow). Sent surgeon the message and hopefully he is fine with that as well.

    Thursday is coming fast

I went through 2 open heart surgeries in 4 days and always kinda felt like things didn’t go back together totally the same. I have a pretty good bump at the bottom of my sternum that I assume is scar tissue. Kinda funny seeing X-rays 25 years later with all those wires still in there.
