    Unusually LOUD heartbeat

After my first surgery (Ross procedure) my heart thump and pulse was so extreme that my limbs pulsed and caused the hospital bed shook a little and caused the frame to squeak. Even now, when I am very still and the room is quiet the thumping is still pronounced (as well as the clicking from my...

Mechanical Valve Noise and Quality of Life Study

My on-X aortic valve is really loud and thumps in my chest. People ask me about it all the time. Bothered me for a couple weeks at first but I am completely used to it now. Rock steady pulse at 60 bmp so I can even tell time with it.

    New here, getting Ross procedure

I had the Ross at age 21 for the same reasons you mentioned. Did great for 20 years and then had to have both the aortic and pulmonary valves replaced again. Have had a mechanical valve now for two years and being on warfarin is not as big of a deal as I thought it would be. I’m living life to...

My 15 yo daugther - soccer dreams on warfarin

I think the only potentially good viable other option besides a mechanical valve is the Ross procedure. I had one at the age of 20, and the valves lasted for 20 years. No meds, no restrictions other than no repetitive heavy lifting. I recently had both my aortic and pulmonary valves replaced...

    Unusually LOUD heartbeat

After my Ross procedure I experienced something similar. Loud thumping. At one point I thought something was wrong with my hospital bed because it was creaking rythymically, but then I realized my arms and legs were bobbing ever so slightly to my pulse and shaking the bed. It got better with time.

    Ross Procedure

@PAN Just wanted to weigh in with my personal experience. I had a Ross procedure at age 21 and it lasted me well for 20+ years. My life was normal in all respects save for the scar on my chest and yearly echocardiograms. At the 20 year mark the aortic valve began to leak and the pulmonary...

    Born-Again Valver

Yes, I am now. Certainly more convenient. I am just more mindful about what I do mainly- avoid contact sports, drive a bit more defensively, etc. I do physical work still. I get my share of scrapes and bruises- more so now, but nothing major. The biggest change is that I was living in...

Bluecross/BS "blue card" black hole trying to get home INR equipment

Blue Cross Blue Shield is a joke for home INR testing. (Though they have been awesome for everything else over the years.) I tried for several months to get home testing stuff, but eventually just gave up. This included multiple calls talking to various agents. I got all of the billing codes...

    Born-Again Valver

I had the Ross procedure at age 21 in 2001. I was able to go 20 years with the autograft and homograft, but both were deteriorated when I had my second surgery a year ago. This time I have another homograft for the pulomonary valve and the On-X for my aortic valve. I wish it made sense for...

BAV / 4.4cm ascending aorta dilatation weightlifting

My experience with a bicuspid aortic valve was that I could lift moderate weights (10-12 reps per set) and be fine. I had the Ross procedure at age 20 and continued to lift moderately for almost two decades. When I turned 39 I had a bit of a mid life crisis I guess and started powerlifting...

Ross procedure or mechanical aortic valve for reoperation

I had the Ross procedure 20 years ago. I also just had both valves replaced again- the aortic with an On-X, and the pulmonary with another homograft. I am forty now. If I had to do it again, I would either have just had the bad aortic valve replaced with a mechancal years ago and adjusted my...

    Lifting weights

Listen to your body. I did try moderately lifting before my surgery for a few months, but found anytime my heart rate was up over 140 for any length of time or I did HIIT I would feel nauceous and get chest pain after the workout. That was when I called it quits other than riding a bike and...

    Lifting weights

I enjoyed lifting after my Ross procedure for many years. Moderate weights, no power lifting, no single lifts. After 18 years of no issues and no leakage in either my aortic or pulmonary valve, I pressed my cardiologist on the subject, and he said lift how I wanted, and that I was doing fine...

Double valve replacement story, 2nd surgery, 9 days post op

Checking in again. I am doing well. I moved back home last week. I am driving again. My INR has been high (over 3.5) the last few weeks, but yesterday it was 2.9, so it appears we are getting my warfarin dose dialed in. In two months I will be able to apply for home testing. The only...

Double valve replacement story, 2nd surgery, 9 days post op

Just an update and answers to the above questions. The pain when I was coming out from the anesthesia was because I had not been given any heavy pain meds yet. They wanted to get my breathing tube out before giving me anything that would put me back to sleep. Once that task was done they gave...

Double valve replacement story, 2nd surgery, 9 days post op

It took 24 hours for the afib to stop, but I am back into normal sinus rhythm at 80 bpm. Hoping it stays that way.

Double valve replacement story, 2nd surgery, 9 days post op

My INR was 4.4 yesterday morning. So still working on my warfarin dosing. Then in the afternoon my heart went into AFib with a rapid pulse so I ended up in the er. They got my rate down, and all my tests were good. Sent me home, but I’m still in AFib. Uncomfortable not having a rhythmic...

Post op day 9- AVR and PVR (redoing a Ross procedure)

Hi Everyone! I have a long thread in the intros section, but thought I would post a brief message here. I am a 40 year old male in good shape. I had a Ross procedure in 2001 for a bicuspid aortic valve, but it started leaking again, and the pulmonary valve calicifed and stenosed. I just had...

Double valve replacement story, 2nd surgery, 9 days post op

I wanted to log my experiences for the sake of everyone who is looking squarely at having valve replacement surgery. I am a 40 year old male. I was first diagnosed with aortic insufficiency due to a bicuspid valve at age 19. I elected to have a Ross procedure in 2001, which was performed with...

    Ross Procedure 1996

Hi Mike I had a Ross procedure in 2001 at the OU medical center by Dr. Ronald Elkins. I was 21. I am 6’ tall, 168 pounds, fit, and very active. I eat unprocessed foods mostly, though I’m not strict past that. Everything has been awesome until a few weeks ago. My yearly echo showed some aortic...
