    Mechanical Valve Data

My father had a St Jude mechanical implanted when he was 42 and died of unrelated cancer at 78, so 36 years there.

Anyone get skin eruptions/bad rash from warfarin?

Lol it’s not dermatitis, it’s not itchy or a rash or dry, or flakey or fungal. It’s under the skin surface and been seen by a doctor years ago, where I was told something along the lines of that’s what you get being on warfarin lol But thanks.

Issue with a Roche Coaguchek INRange

Yea you normally get error code 5 for not enough blood, the fact it just counts down to nothing is odd, clearly it knows the strip is in there but isn’t detecting the sample. I guess you have tried new batteries…. I get error 6 when my batteries are getting down even though the meter says they...

10 year's with questions i need to ask. Age 34

My father had a St Jude implanted when he was 42 and it was still ticking when he passed last year at 78 from unrelated causes. So they do last a lifetime.

    INR after Paracetamol (Tylenol)

As a one off paracetamol does not affect my INR. However last time I had a filling it hurt after so I was taking paracetamol for a few days and it definitely affected my INR, think it went up to 4.4 from memory.

Blood Thinners (and why they aren't)

I just find when I tell people I’m on warfarin they say ‘oh blood thinners’ to which I generally reply ‘ it doesn’t actually thin your blood it just extends the clotting time, to which a blank look back is normally given. I don’t care because I know better. My father RIP was on warfarin for 30+...

    K2 and Calcium

Much of what he says in the clip you can read here, maybe they used it as a reference for writing this- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4566462/

    INR

If it was me, I would adjust his dose and not tell them if you think they would be averse to this. I don't know what pill sizes you have and from what I understand they vary country to country, but it sounds like he probably needs a 1/2 mg less a day or there abouts. I don't split tabs I just...

    Eliquis and prosthetic heart valves

Definitely interested to hear what your cardiologist says. The links and previous thread seem to be pretty cut and dry, not for artificial valves so I'm guessing that is both mechanical and the 3 months post op recommendation for tissue valvers to be anticoagulated. But if you have a tissue...

Mechanical Valve Noise and Quality of Life Study

I think maybe they mean maybe you could start your own ministry.. All cheques made out to Combined Australian Stricken Hearts or C.A.S.H. for short....

Mechanical Valve Noise and Quality of Life Study

I hear it as an internal noise, it's not something I would say I enjoy hearing; I liken it to some sort of water dripping torture treatment sometimes... :) Saying that it's pretty easy to NOT hear it and get on with things, you just simply forget to hear it. I can go all day and then I hear it...

I can't even GIVE my meters away

Apart from the error 5 I think it is for not enough blood I reckon generally most other errors are attributable to batteries. I was getting error 8 every time after it went thru the strip warm up, battery meter looked good. Weeks of this went by and i thought it must be dodgy strips, but then I...

I can't even GIVE my meters away

Good stuff Protimenow, there's a self tester out there that just doesn't know it yet :) I have found both offering meters on threads and also PM people when you see them post questions asking about self testing or the cost of new meters. The more we can share the self empowerment the better!

Hi Gia, welcome FWIW if you go the mechanical valve route it should last your lifetime, my father had a mechanical St Jude implanted in 1984 and passed last year from unrelated cancer. He had no issues from 30+ years of warfarin. He had childhood rheumatic fever whereas I had a bicuspid valve so...

400 person study on lower INR (1.5-2.5) with mechanical valve

Shame to read that the FDA is bent more than a banana... as a "friends of NATO" country from what I've seen our pharmaceuticals industry here take all the approvals as gospel. I'll flog a dead horse and say I have spoken to of a number of people on warfarin for Afib switched over to Dabigatran...

Aortic aneurism with bicuspid valve - options in 51 year old

Hi Andy, where abouts in NZ are you? I'm guessing perhaps Auckland as I had my OHS in Chch and I think there's only 3 surgeons here that all work out of the same pool for public and do private as well. My 2 cents on warfarin is it is easier to manage it yourself here, I see a pool of doctors at...

    Warfarin (Coumadin) and sleep problems

Not insomnia but still sleep related, I came across this recently as I have sleep apnea and have just started using a CPAP machine in the last few weeks, I also hover around 10-11mg a day warfarin dose depending on my INR week to week, I have spent the last 8 weeks on 11mg daily but after a few...

I don’t know what to do anymore

@carolinemc if you still have the card St Jude sends out a few months after your op it will say on there. My number starts with 27AGN, 27mm is the size and the AGN I believe denotes it is a Regent. My fathers valve was a 25A-101 St Jude. I have heard the number is also imprinted on the valve...
