    Eight years later.....

I had AVR and an aortic graft in 2015. I'm 71. I have had back fatigue and chronic upper body aches ever since. I've tried every exercise under the sun. My torso gets tired after 15-20 minutes on my feet and I have to lie down. My shoulders and arms burn after 15-20 minutes of guitar playing...

Anyone else develop chronic fatigue due to surgical trauma?

Due again this summer, but many times in the first year post-op when I felt the worse. All normal. I have an Edwards tissue valve. There's an exertional threshold that if crossed, leaves me in a fatigue/malaise similar to what CFS folks describe.

Anyone else develop chronic fatigue due to surgical trauma?

It's been 5 years since my AVR. I'm 69 now. I wouldn't say that I have full blown Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but I definitely have a limitation to my stamina and fitness. I was hoping my surgery would be a ticket to renewed fitness vitality, but even though my heart is fine, my body was totally...

Very prone to back pain 3.5 years later. Anyone else?

Thanks. I've actually never had low back issues. This is between my shoulder blades along the spine, where the ribs attach in the back. I've been working on strengthening the surrounding muscles.

Very prone to back pain 3.5 years later. Anyone else?

My back has been my weak link. If I get tired from exercising or gardening or just standing for a long time, it's my back that aches first. i do a lot of back strengthening exercises but it remains my wink link. I wonder if it has to do with the pressures on the spine when they retract your...

    Persistent Upper Back Ache

The combination of AVR [2 years ago] and practicing guitar 3 hours/day seems to be a perfect storm of persistent back ache. While i don't expect too many members to have the same lifestyle, I wondered about others have susceptibility to back aches nonetheless. Thanks.

Surgery Triggered Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Anyone else?

Surgery was Sept 2015. After a year, I realized my muscles weren't getting in shape and I felt crappy [malaise] after exercise, even though my heart/lungs were great. Then when I realized practicing guitar for an hour made me sick, and my general need for rest was increasing, I realized it was...

A Caffeine Story --a cautionary tale

Like everything, it's dose related. I was taking 400-600mg...the safe max. Caffeine is a great mental stimulant [though you do get an after-crash because of the adenosine buildup], and athletes use it as a speed boost. But if you have muscles that tire easily and recover slowly from workouts...

A Caffeine Story --a cautionary tale

I'm 65, and 18 months post-op. Until 2 weeks ago, my cardiac recovery was perfect but my muscular/fitness recovery wasn't. I realized that all the caffeine that helped me mentally with the post-op fatigue, backfired on my large muscles. The constant caffeine-induced low grade neuro-muscular...

    Lasting Trauma

Hi folks. I'm 65 and had aortic valve replacement and aortic aneurysm repair 18 months ago. It's not without irony, but it has started to feel that though my life was saved obviously, the general trauma of surgery appears to be having lasting effects. I was always a low energy person and even as...

    Back Ache when walking

Had surgery 6 months ago and I still get a dull ache between my shoulder blades when exercise walking. In fact as I get tired, my fatigue is located there somehow. Sound familiar?

Can't stop thinking about it....scared to death of ascending aortic aneurysm surgery!

All the best to you Darla. And get yourself a good wicking shirt; most people get night sweats for a few months and the shirt really helps.

Can't stop thinking about it....scared to death of ascending aortic aneurysm surgery!

I spent 60 years in fear of 'the day'. When the day came, 9/28/15, I came to terms with it by realizing how much in life is out of our control, and how our trusting of those in charge (our car mechanics, our surgeons, our elevator mechanics, the carpenter who put the rail on your basement...

    Leg Conditioning

Thanks everyone. It helps a lot to hear from you. I decided my legs were not going to get stronger slogging along, so I've switched to faster interval walks with hills, 3-4x a week , and a longer endurance walk 1-2x.
