Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

Congratulations on your surgery and best wishes for your recovery! I've mostly been feeling really great for the past three years, except for occasional AFib. I had a couple AFib episodes early this year, after which I cut out alcohol completely – I had only been drinking a little bit, but if...

    5k in under 30 minutes!

I run slowly around my neighborhood most days, but when I run with my office’s club, I get inspired and do 5 miles/8k in about 42 minutes.

    Two years for me today

My St. Jude Regent has been ticking along for 731 days. I’m feeling good! Pic from a friend’s wedding last month — I haven’t cut my hair since November, 2019.

    54 years..........but who's counting!

2 to the 31 — many systems keep track of time as seconds since January 1, 1970 (“Epoch time”), and older systems use a signed 32-bit integer. Modern 64-bit systems don’t have a Y2038 problem. It’s all the 32-bit systems that we have to worry about (embedded systems and old computers), but...

    54 years..........but who's counting!

    I wasn’t worried about the Y2K problem, but I’m a little nervous about Y2038!

    Before and after run times

Now that I’m 50, I’m eager to run competitively again to see if I can place in my age group!

    Before and after run times

I started walking right off the bat — even in the hospital. I went for regular brisk walks every day until I was cleared to run four months after my surgery, then I started running and biking on my usual schedule. It felt good — not like starting from scratch! I also did cardiac rehab for a few...

    Did you have a follow-up echo 4-6 weeks post-op?

I was scheduled for one at my cardiologist’s office four weeks after surgery. As it turns out, I was in the hospital next door recovering from AFlutter and tachycardia. They wheeled a very cool mobile echo machine into my hospital room and did it there. The scan showed an increase in ejection...

Moving to a plant based diet

Probably not all, but after my CT scan to check whether I should get a CABG along with my AR, my cardiologist told me I should stick with my vegan diet, because I had zero blockage. I had post-op anemia, but it got better on its own. I was vegetarian, not vegan, for a few months after surgery...

Moving to a plant based diet

It depends on the vegan, and their motivations. I’d do it if I had to, and I call myself a vegan, but I’m glad that question didn’t arise for me.

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Mine was four weeks after surgery, arranged by my cardiologist, when I was back in the hospital recovering from AFlutter and tachycardia. My left ventricle was back to a normal-ish size already, and my ejection fraction had already gone back up to normal, so it was some nice to hear.

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

I think I heard four weeks to driving, but I can’t remember because I don’t drive much. My surgeon was pretty chill about the restrictions, although they did exist — I immediately asked for a 10 pound max lift instead of 5, because that’s ridiculous. He told me that every patient he’s ever...

    Cyborg in training

I had another brief episode of AFib in February, and my cardiologist bumped me up to a 2.0 - 3.0 target for my INR. Other than that, feeling great! My cardiologist says these AFib episodes tend to get longer and more frequent as time goes on, and if that happens to me, I’ll get referred to an...

    Cyborg in training

Thanks! I'm super happy about my mechanical valve. Others' posts on this site have done a lot to ally *my* anxiety, so I'm glad I could pass that along!
