Confidence...if only there was a pill

JannerJohn, Regardless of all the encouraging statistics, modern medical facilities and confident, capable surgeons; it is completely reasonable to be scared before heart surgery. Its a big deal and YOU are the one getting the new hardware. I feel that fear of open heart surgery, much like...

    Need some guidance

Hi Hank, I had a similar situation. I had known my entire life that I had a funky aortic valve that would require replacement but the aortic aneurysm didn't pop up until I was in my late 30's. I mountain bike a lot, long distance type riding with a lot of hill climbing, so I was pretty nervous...

    Tapping on sternum

Paul, I used to get that quite a bit following my surgery. Upon deep breathes, it was almost as if the my heart was shifting up a few inches into my upper chest and beating against the back of my upper sternum. It subsided after a few months, and is completely gone now, 3.5 years later.

    Increasingly Moderate Aortic Regurgitation?

I would concur with getting a new echo as a matter of course.....however; when I started becoming increasingly symptomatic prior to surgery, it was when my regurgitation increased. Even a small increase in Aortic Valve inefficiency will bring the symptoms you described. Your symptoms say more...

BAV, Exercise, and being a 17 year old athlete

Not a doctor, but very similar story to yours. Aortic Stenosis, monocuspid valve, regurgitation....the whole shot. I played baseball, basket ball and rode a ton of bikes while growing up. Only time I really noticed any symptoms was weight lifting. That's a lot of pressure on your heart and...

Low INR requirement ON-X valve and Skiing, 13 year old

Hi Twinsunnysideup, Prior to having my valve replaced (Aortic On-x also) I was seriously considering that I wanted to go with a tissue valve because I mountain bike, motorcycle, hike, shoot..etc. etc.....All due to the fear of anti coagulation therapy. As I got closer to the surgery, I read...

Mobile Apps for INR monitoring and Warfarin Reminders

I use Alere Home monitoring. They have a pretty good app. Just look for Alere in the app store.

    Before and After Coumadin

No real difference for me before or after...other than taking pills and testing. I still have a couple beers now and then, ride my mountain bike, hike, fish...... It really is not as a big a deal as you think it is before you have the valve replaced. I would take the minor inconvenience of...

Pressure in ears when standing after long sitting periods

Hey Henry, I definitely used to get to where could feel/hear blood rushing through my ears after some heavy exertion. Similar to the "whoosh whoosh" you described. I don't recall it ever affecting my hearing though. It only happened after a overdoing it on a tough hill on my bike or something...

    Those with aortic regurgitation

I think many of the people you see discussing Aortic Stenosis and/or Bi-cuspid valves actually do have regurgitation, its just not discussed as the primary issue because it is typically a result of the stenosis and bicuspid valve. I had Aortic Stenosis and a mono-cusp valve as a little kid but...

    Post-surgery & house projects?

At about 6 or 7 weeks, I decided to dig out an old sprinkler line in my yard that I had wanted to get out for a while. I was bored, like you mentioned so I figured I would give it a shot. The sternum was ok as long as I held the shovel at the right angle.....but what really got me, was my heart...

Medication post op and coming off them...

I have been on metoprolol since my AVR in June 2014. Initially, of course, it helps protect your heart and arteries during the recovery period, helps reduce PVCs, ETC. I asked my cardiologist about coming off of it completely as I feel it has some affect on me during physical exercise. He...

    Activities during at-home recovery

I think the lap top will be ok. Strumming a guitar may be pretty tough for the first couple weeks though. I read a lot, played video games, watched tv....and walked as much as I could.

    On-X and Lower INR Protocol

Hey Pellicle....I read the same thing about the aspirin only study in europe; although I cant remember where at the moment. Figures, haha.

    Getting ready for recovery

Hey Liam, Staying positive is a huge help. I was actually excited to get it done, believe it or not, and I think that helped quite a bit. Also, while I had to reduce my physical activity in the months prior to surgery, I continued to ride my bike and walk up until two days before, just at a...

Strong emotions at post operative visit

Makes sense to have those emotions I think. You spend so much time for pre-surgery follow up, post surgery follow up, INR Check ups, etc. etc, etc.....by the time its all over, everyone there knows your name and you know theirs. About 3 months post op, my wife and I brought a card and a bunch of...
