Change in Echocardiogram Guidelines for Mechanical Valves

Wow. Didn’t know this. I still get them every year. Mine is coming up in 2 weeks. I have a feeling they are watching mine closely as it is my 2nd mechanical and is over 28 years old. Very interesting that they have changed the standards. That’s good to hear.

    Symptoms of aortic valve failure

I'm sorry Gia, that does not sound fun. Stay on top of it and tell your doctor if your symptoms are getting worse. I have symptoms of shortness of breath and lower energy and ascites, but that last symptom has gotten better since my last OHS 5 years ago. Now I have to admit, it's probably not...

    Retained pacing wires

If you can zoom in on these pics, you can read a little about my wires, the wires I'm assuming I still have. This is a medical journal I was in. Sorry for the pics being sideways. To quote part of the article: Following their placement, the epicardial electrodes are exteriorized and the ends...

    Retained pacing wires

Thanks Sim and Protime now. It’s interesting to hear who else has them and how long they’ve had them. I’m excited to finally get this MRI to maybe be able to move forward with fixing this knee. I do in home health, and it gets a workout. Haha My 7 previous MRIs never caused a problem, but they...

    Retained pacing wires

Who else has retained pacing wires? I have some from 1982. I was told they left them in there in case I needed a pacemaker soon after. In that case, they could just make a small incision, and implant it. Rather than to cut me all the way open again. I know they are much simpler now. My wires are...

Anyone had 3 valve replacement surgeries?

Only 2 valve replacements, but 3 OHS. Will probably need a 3rd valve replacement in the future, but not yet. my third OHS took a lot longer to recover from, but that was due to all the fluid. I took a diuretic for 3 years. Finally got off of it at almost 2 1/2 year post op, and feel much better now

    MRI on Shoulder - safety

I’ve had internal temporary pacing wires since 1982. I’ve had several MRIs over the years and never experienced a problem. In 2015, I went in for an MRI on my knee. The health paperwork asked if I had a pacemaker or pacing wires. I checked yes, and circled pacing wires. They would not do an MRI...

    Staying the Course -- 04/24/2019

So sorry super bob. Sounds like you have some unexpected things coming your way. Love that you are able to make adjustments. As for me, I finally feel recovered from surgery. I feel like I’m finally myself again. So, I have been eating more fruits and veggies and less junk. Only eating when I’m...

    25 years with this valve

Today marks 25 years since my current St. Judes mechanical mitral valve was put in. It replaced my 11 1/2 year old Bjork Shiley valve, because I outgrew it. I was 2 years old when the Bjork Shiley was put in and 13 years old when I received this current valve. 25 years and going strong! I...

Calcification of a St. judes mechanical mitral valve?

Clickon, thank you. I ended up getting diagnosed with Constrictive Pericarditis at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. They did a TEE and said my mechanical valve from 1993 is still working great. February 19 of this year, I had a Pericardiectomy done at the Mayo Clinic. All of my heart failure...

In shock - 12 great years later, just discovered I need another OHS

Kristine, welcome back to the group. Sorry you have to have your valve replaced again. Sounds like you knew it was coming eventually. Glad you can find great support and information here. I had my mitral valve replaced at 2 years old and again at 13 years old, both mechanical. I've been on...

    Constrictive Pericarditis

Thank you all for the kind words. Mayo did a TEE yesterday and a heart cath today. The results showed constriction, just like they thought. Monday we will do the pericardiectomy. I’m so excited. I have felt terrible for 8 months or so. I’m excited to be among the land of the living again.
