Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery - any tips?

Yeah, waking up with the tube still in isn't pleasant. In 2010 (first AVR) they brought me around as they removed the tube. I wasn't fully awake, so the tube wasn't bad, but when they suctioned the top of mu lungs just before they removed it, my heart went into A-fib. And that lasted about six...

    New Coag-Sense meter

That's pretty good. Are you a writer by trade? Maybe we should start a new comparison thread. The two comparisons I've made thus far are my only two. I just got my mechanical valve five weeks ago, so the AC therapy is new to me. I started making the comparisons as soon as I got the meter. I...

    New Coag-Sense meter

Any interest in meeting up to compare meters? I'm in Burbank, but will happily drive to wherever.

    New Coag-Sense meter

So now I have the second lab result to compare to my CS PT2. The first one was Lab = 1.9, CS PT2 = 2.2. This second on is Lab = 2.5, CS PT2 = 2.7, so it seems the meter is reading a bit high compared to the lab I go to. fwiw, Chris

You can't always trust the labs

Protimenow, when you say that "while others may raise it", are you saying that physical activity will raise someone's INR? I see you mention antibiotics, specifically, as something that will raise an INR reading, but I was wondering about exercise. thanks, Chris

Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery - any tips?

Hi David, Best of luck to you. I've had two aortic replacements (2010 and last month) and the biggest difference between the two procedures was that I didn't have a bad reaction to the anesthesia the second time around. I made a point to speak to the anesthesiologist ahead of time to see if...

    New Coag-Sense meter

Yes, when the Medication Management folks called me with the results, they recommended that instead of my current 3mg/day, that I take 4mg twice a week and 3mg the other five days. I can math, so I asked if they really thought that would be enough of an increase (and isn't it better to take the...

    New Coag-Sense meter

The lab said my INR was 1.9.

    New Coag-Sense meter

I'm 'doing one now'. I just had a blood draw at the lab, drove home and ran a test with my PT2. There was a thirty minute difference from when the lab drew my blood and my own test. My meter shows my INR to be 2.2. I probably won't get the lab results until tomorrow morning.

    New Coag-Sense meter

So the meter arrived yesterday and I tried it out this morning. Easy peasy. I have my next blood draw scheduled for Monday, so I'll self-test again, Monday morning, that so I can compare results.

    New Coag-Sense meter

They're still trying to get my INR into range. I think it was low for about two days. I had a blood draw yesterday, but haven't heard the results yet. I'm very new to this (ten days post-op), but I'm not thrilled with how the warfarin/INR stuff is being managed. Hopefully that meter will ship on...

    New Coag-Sense meter

That's what I imagine the reason(s) is likely to be. I just ordered a meter, lancets, and test strips. I want to keep and eye on what they're doing. :) I went to the ER last night to have a vein checked out (swollen & painful). It turned out to be a non-issue, but they drew blood and checked...

    New Coag-Sense meter

The medical group that I belong to has a 'Medical Management' division that manages folks that are on Warfarin. I asked them and was told that they don't allow home testing. It's quite likely that at some point, after everything is stabilized, that I'll find a group that does allow/support home...

    New Coag-Sense meter

Thanks for the report on these. I'm eight days post-op and shopping for a meter. My medical group (current) doesn't allow self-monitoring, but I want to do if for my own information. I think I'm going to order one of these (Coag-Sense pt2).

    coming up on AVR #2...

Thanks for all of the good thoughts. I got discharged from the hospital last night. It feels so good to be home. This time around was a markedly different experience as compared to my first AVR in 2010. This time I didn't seem to have any negative reaction to the anesthesia at all, which was...
