    Murmur after surgery

I had a murmur straight away after my aortic valve replacement in 2014. On discharge from hospital I saw my GP for a repeat prescription of the meds I was given. GP listened to my heart and noted "very loud murmur". I am sometimes used as a patient for MRCP Paces exam (doctors who moving on up...

    One day at a time

That's so worrying for you Seaton that suddenly things not right. I'm glad the cardiac nurse called you back and is aware of things. Wsihing that you feel better very soon and that the symptoms resolve.

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

In the UK the "minimally invasive" procedure can be either a mini-sternotomy or a through the ribs incision. Both require the patient to be on bypass/heart lung machine. But here from the Annals of Cardiac Surgery: http://www.annalscts.com/article/view/5476/6298 though I've seen some US sites...

Hi SB - I thought of you yesterday when I read that the dreadful hurricane was heading your way. What with that hurricane in your area of the world and our government in chaos today......hope things will be okay for everyone.

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery is also how "mini-sternotomy" (approx 4 inch sternotomy instead of full length) is described. So minimally invasive can either be between the ribs or a shorter sternotomy incision. Either way it's open heart surgery and heart lung machine the same as a full sternotomy...

Still struggling cardio wise running, etc. 2.8 years after Aortic Valve replacement

I never got back to the level of fitness I had prior to aortic vave replacement. I was extremely fit prior to surgery, lifting heavy weights and walking several miles per day - I even did that the day before surgery no problem. My replacement valve is small and I have moderate patient prosthesis...

    Family planning

Absolutely. My son has autistic spectrum disorder which is another inheritable conditon. It is a lifelong condition that can't be 'fixed', my son will need support and help throughout his life, he suffers daily from problems his condition gives him, whereas BAV either doesn't cause a problem or...

    Family planning

My son has never been screened, I've never heard of that being done to children of a BAV parent here in the UK. On the other hand, my son is always asking his GP to check his heart, and GP has heard no mumur. My son is now 30. The murmur from my BAV was first heard when I ws 25, it probably...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

I know it can be distressing to think that a surgeon has made a mistake, especially in such major surgery. I would think that at the very least Edwards would be wanting to do an investigation as to why one of their valves degenerated ("small holes in each of the leaflets” you wrote) after just a...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

When aortic vlave replacement is done, the surgeon uses a 'sizer' to measure the space where the valve is placed which is where the native valve has just been taken from. The space has very fibrous tissue (this explained to me by a cardiac surgeon) so the sizer will measure the exact space...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

Have they investigated why the original surgeon put in a valve too small? That's an incredible difference from 23mm to 27/29 ! My valve is too small for my body but the right size for the space where the aortic valve goes in my heart....my heart size is actually too small as I have a depressed...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

But the heart would get damaged with left ventricular hypertrophy as when a valve is too small (patient prosthesis mismatch) it is effectively stenotic even though it's functioning fine - ie my pressure gradients are nearly in the severe stenotic range but my valve has not degraded yet.

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

Hi @LoveMyBraveHeart Sorry to read Mathias's valve deteriorated so soon after it was implanted. I see you wrote he had patient prosthesis mismatch - do you know how bad that was, ie moderate or severe, and what were his pressure gradients ? I guess they worked out he had PPM because of what...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

Hi @LoveMyBraveHeart There are two things that are supposed to protect the Inspiris Resilia valve from calcification/stenosis: "1. Blocks Calcium Build-up. The INSPIRIS valve uses the RESILIA tissue, a new type of bovine (cow) tissue with special technology that blocks calcium build-up on the...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

I would guess so as patient prosthesis mismatch leads to high pressure gradients which has an effect on the heart ultimately. But I suspect that a mechnical valve wouldn't degrade under the higher pressure gradients, would it ? It would just effect the heart and the person. The effect of PPM on...

TAVR/TAVI: Recall of SAPIEN 3 Ultra Delivery System Due to Burst Balloons During Surgery

I had AVR with bioprosthetic/bovine valve five and a half years ago and have moderate patient prosthesis mismatch which will probably mean a re-do sooner rather than later as the pressure gradients are very high. I would not be a candidate for TAVR, even if I wanted one which I wouldn't, as my...

The benefit of an idiot friend

Before I had OHS I imagined my chest being opened something a bit like is shown in the film Alien. Ribs raised up and spread open. Then last year I saw a whole OHS live on UK television - saw how actually it was not nearly so dramatic - the saw was very quick down the sternum, very quick, and...
