Staying the Course: April 2021 Edition

SB, thanks for posting this. I haven't been that active because I've been busy. I do try to check in every couple weeks. I have lost about 18 lbs since the beginning of 2020, down from 184. But I don't see weight loss as a subject that most posting to STC are writing about. I do believe STC...

    Staying the Course -- March 16, 2021

Haven't checked in for a while. Went into the belly of the beast today (Anaheim, one of the cities with high virus numbers) and received my first Moderna vaccine. No reaction so far. My wife received the same vaccine a week ago. Finally received my 90 day layoff notice at work. They're closing...

Thanks for the photo Superman. That's one of the reasons I left Michigan 35 years ago! Too many winters. Out here if we want snow we drive a couple hours. The taller "local" mountains have snow now but our local is too short (5500 feet).

They announced that Disneyland will be a vaccine site for Orange County. Happiest Place On Earth. I think they said there would be 6 big sites. I'm not 65 yet so won't get on the list. I would rather wait for the new vaccine that is based on dead virus instead of mRNA. Hospitalizations in the...

Staying the Course -- Felicitations, Year 2021

We celebrated New Years Eve with just the two of us working a puzzle. Then on New Years we got up later and did a run with friends to the Pier in San Clemente and back, about 4.5 miles. Weather was perfect, we could see Catalina Island and also Santa Cruz Island. Tailgate party followed. And it...

Staying the Course -- Bye, Bye 2020 Edition

I'm not afraid to look back at the past year! Here is what was good about 2020: My health is better than at the end of 2019. I'm still working. Lost 15 lbs. Running again. It's slow but I can run 3 hilly miles without stopping and it's more comfortable. It will get easier. We're still social...

Great story SB. Our dog is a rescue and makes sure that we go out for walks and runs almost every day. That's what she lives for and I get the benefit of it. Wouldn't have it any other way, an active dog fits into our lifestyle.

I'm glad I'm not going to have to make the decision for at least 6 months. It will take that long to get the vaccines out to "normal" people. I haven't read much about the vaccine but need to do a search on what it does to your body. The long term side effects are unknown. If I had to make the...

    Staying the Course -- December 3, 2020

Thanks SB. I'm a year away from going thru this. I've typically had an HMO since I am fairly active and healthy. Just had my yearly physical today. Will have to wait for the blood test results. BP was high but it was early in the morning before my meds kicked in. Pulse rate of 41 got the nurse...

Staying the Course -- Thanksgiving Week 2020

Happy Thanksgiving week all. There will only be 6 here at our house for the day. The concern is a niece that's 18 and lives in a high positive case city. I will stay distant. Eating will be outside if it's warm enough. I had a recent eye doctor exam, last one was 3 years ago. All was good, no...

    Staying the Course -- November 9, 2020

It rained here over the weekend! Walked the small 9-hole golf course today and shot a 40 (par is 29 so I'm not that good). Did get 2 birdies and a par and only lost 1 ball. Back down to 170 lbs. That's a good weight for me. Back to standard time so now it's dark when we meet for running/walking...

Staying the Course -- Election Day 2020 Edition

Rich01, you sure did work hard on that, congratulations. I'm just doing maintenance and that's enough for me. Everything grows year around here in So Cal. Looks like the local fire is either out or far away now. I haven't heard any news on it. We ran near the burn area on Sunday and luckily the...

    Staying the Course -- October 27, 2020

SB, glad to hear your ear surgery is over and you had good results. Weather is finally cooled down in the evenings. We almost missed out on fires here but last Monday we finally had one locally. It has burned up some of our local hiking trails and up into the local mountains again. Still working...

    Staying the Course -- October 21, 2020

Running was not painful for me. I enjoyed running and racing. So that's pleasure. The decision to run on a given day was motivated by what was needed for training vs. if I was really tired physically or mentally. The motivation was a longer range goal. Train and stay healthy. Run enough miles...

    Staying the Course -- October 21, 2020

When I didn't feel like it I would think back to when I didn't feel like running but did it anyway. I knew that I would feel better once I committed and did it. Some days I knew I was just too tired and it wouldn't pay off. Back then I was running 60 miles a week when training. A rest day was...

    Staying the Course -- October 21, 2020

My opinion - self motivation comes from within. It's doing something that you don't have to do. I've been a runner all my adult life. Many nights after work I had to make a decision to go out the door for a run or sit on the couch. I didn't always run. Today I still have to make that decision on...

Tissue Valvers. How Old is Yours?

I just passed 8 years on my St. Jude porcine mitral valve. My yearly physical with primary care physician (year ago) and my yearly appointment with my cardiologist (spring), both said valve sounded good. Cardiologist said I didn't need another echo for 3 years. I ran 3 miles yesterday so it must...

    Staying the Course -- October 7, 2020

We don't get trick or treaters, not may young kids in our neighborhood and we're on the edge where it's not worth walking to our house. I buy candy that I like because that's where it goes. Had another good run last night. Walked maybe 300-400 yards of a 3 miler. I think I'm getting stronger...

Sorry to hear that Cici, but sounds like you're tough and getting thru it. The INR will eventually get there. Hope to see reports of your Cardiac Rehab in the future.
