What I find really weird is that many (not all) of the same folks who are against the vaccine seem to be for every other symptom treatment that has been held out as a possible cure. From worming tablets to malaria drugs. But no to the vaccine at all costs. Relying on information out of the Middle East over information out of America? Are we in bizarro world?

It’s like they dug a trench and will not give up their position regardless of how indefensible it is.

But that's how people are a lot. They don't like to admit they're wrong especially when the people who are telling them they are wrong aren't their people..... Maybe if their own doctor tells them? The thing that I always find strange is it seems like a lot of them will say the virus really isn't dangerous or it's a hoax but then they'll go on to list the things that will "really" work on it......

I have a friend very close to that ledge. I think I do a pretty good job keeping him off it. It’s a fine balance between lending a sympathetic ear and gently correcting some misinformation. I never tell him he’s wrong directly. Just mild corrections.

Good for you for gently keeping your friend off the ledge.

Anyone who has kids knows that often your kids pick your friends, at least some of them. We have ended up having a lot of get togethers and even camping trips with the families of our kid's friends. Some of the families have turned out to be very conspiracy minded, believing virtually every conspiracy that comes along, while distrusting the government, researchers and medicine in general.

The things I have actually heard over the years from them:

-The moon landing was faked - somehow they got 1,000s of scientists involved to go along with this, and not even one deathbed confession.
-Cancer was cured almost 100 years ago, using some sort of electro-magnetism device. The government, not wanting cancer to be resolved, bought the patent and shelved it.
-Chemtrails- the white line you often see behind jets in the sky- really chemicals being sprayed upon the population for some nefarious purpose.
-Never get a smart phone- the government uses them to track you. Only use a flip phone and try to keep it off most of the time to avoid tracking. I'm sure that would be really interesting to those tracking me: "Ok, he's just gone into Trader Joe's. Ok, he's buying sundried tomatoes, just grabbed an avocado...." Yeah, but for some reason they want to track us apparently.
-Best to only drink Ph water. It cures virtually every ailment known. One family even installed a $ 3,500 system in their kitchen sink to produce it and tried very hard to get us to install one.
- The best way to fight off infection is not anti-biotics, but colloidal silver. Scary.

It goes on infinitely.

On Covid-19, the ever evolving things that they were saying as time went on:

-First it was not real, back in March 2020: " Do you even know anyone whose gotten Covid? I think they are making it up to control us."
-Then they acknowledged it was real, but no more serious than a cold.
-This soon morphed into being no more serious than the flu.
-Then, there was a cure, hydroxychloroquine, but Big Pharma, Big Medicine and Big Government did not want us to know that it really works.
-When the death toll became undeniable, they claimed that the numbers were false and being exaggerated.
-Facemasks don't help at all
-Which soon became: not only don't facemasks help, but they cause Covid-19
-Social distancing does not work. They never stopped gatherings. One family we know all got Covid and grandpa ended up the the hospital. He survived. We have extended family members who embraced conspiracy and were not so fortunate.
- The vaccine does not work and is designed to do us harm. Might even have micro-chips in it to implant in our bodies.
-Bill Gates and the evil Dr. Fauci stand to gain billions from the vaccine, as they own the patent.
- Ivermectin is a proven cure for Covid-19, but nefarious institutions, and the evil Dr. Fauci, are hiding this from us because they want us to keep taking the vaccine so they can control us.

Pre-Covid, my wife and I found their whacky ideas humorous. Ok, so they believe in chemtrails, well, so what? You just knew that they had a couple of screws loose and had trouble critically analyzing and discerning information. But, when Covid hit, these crazy beliefs and their distrust of science and medicine became deadly. We have had to cut off some friendships, as some of them really went off the deep end with all of this.

This is an interesting article on why some folks tend to believe conspiracy theories:

It's funny you say that. My wife's nephew is 16 and he mentioned about being tracked and I said "What are you doing that the NSA would be so interested in? Like going to Taco Bell twice a day?"

" Never get a smart phone- the government uses them to track you. "

Well, in all fairness, the NSA is has acknowledged gathering location data, and has acknowledged gathering the contents of some unknown (> 500m) number of phone calls and texts. They ***theoretically**** can only connect it to you in the context of an investigation, approved by a judge. (I have a bridge, etc....)

My guess? They *have* my data, but they don't *look at* my data. They unquestionably run it past pattern recognition software to see if I fit the behavior of any suspect groups.

Don’t know that I like that thought process. You shouldn’t care about unauthorized searches if you don’t have anything to hide? I know the internet is blurring the lines of public private to an unprecedented extent though.

Good point. Unfortunately, there is often a grain of truth to a few of the conspiracies. From what I gather from the folks who believe they’re being tracked, they think the government wants to know their location so they can come take their guns at some point, or lock them up for revealing the “truth” about the vaccine.
On the other hand, cell phone GPS data, I believe, was used to track down many of the folks that stormed the capital Jan 6. I was glad for the capability in that situation, but can see the potential for abuse.

I just plain don’t understand the choice of those that choose not to get vaccinated knowing that it’s not a choice that just impacts them. I know by being vaccinated I am doing my part to prevent spreading it to others who may get very sick or die.

I don’t live in a bubble nor do I want to. What I do affects others.

It’s not just about us.
Totally agree here Lynn...as do many others. I often wonder how those who choose not to get vaccinated would feel if they passed on COVID to their mother, father, or grandparents and watched them suffer a slow agonizing death, as they struggle to take every breath, and whether they would regret their choice then, or if they would continue to maintain their right to act in their own best interests and everyone else be damned.

...scratching my head in wonder...
humans are interesting creatures aren't they. In the centuries since this nothing has changed

its only that now there are more Ons and they think that because they can scroll Farcebook they are "educated" or "educating themselves"

Huxley was correct

The masses just follow ... it's the influencers who have always been responsible for misleading them. Often its just being opinionated and high on Dunning Kruger, but other times its just plain "look at me" syndrome

such is life

a friend works as a DBA for a major "shopping mall owner" ... they track flip phones and plain phones too. So if THEY can, then the NSA can ... don't have a phone at all if you're wanting to be off grid

no, I'll let you self apply

there is a new formulation available, easy in, but lasting sensation

Studies have found no reduction in viral load. However, surveys have shown that, following application, Covid symptoms are the last thing on the minds of participants.
The cleric states that further studies are therefore warranted.:ROFLMAO:

No I'm not saying that at all. When they introduced drug tests at my work there were people who had the attitude of "If you have nothing to hide why do you care?" But it's the principal. You wouldn't want the cops searching your house randomly with no cause. I'm just saying it seems like the people most paranoid about being tracked aren't doing anything of interest. Furthermore, at least in most of their cases, they have smartphones with the location turned on 24 hours a day in their pocket
