I had a murmur when since i was a child... when i was 35 doctors found an enlarged ascending aorta and bicuspid valve during a routine x-ray that we were monitoring for when we would need to replace the ascending aortic valve. Then in September 2011 I cracked a tooth. Bacteria from got into my blood stream and settled on my bicuspid valve. For several months I was sick and no one could figure out why? All flu like symptoms. Meanwhile, bacteria was literally eating my heart away from the inside. Some of that bacteria flecked off got into my bloodstream and settled on my spleen. At that point it was a race to see which organ would fail first... my heart or my spleen. Lucky for me my spleen won that race. I found myself in the emergency room septic with a burst spleen and 1/2 of my blood supply in my stomach. Surgeons preformed an emergency splenectomy. A days after that I was scoped and it was found that I was in cardiac failure. And three days after that I was in surgery again getting two valves replaced. I later asked a surgeon what were my odds of survival... he gave me 50/50 odds that survived the emergency room visit and 60% odds that i survive the heart surgery giving a 30% odds of survival that I survive both. I am lucky to be alive today.
