New member life and regrets because of the valve

Hello - happy new year - I am under the impression “Dose to the diet”. Eat basically what you want, keep it relatively consistent, and then dial in the warfarin to maintain INR - I aim for 2.5 - 3. Eat those greens and adjust dosage to hit the target.

    Imminent re-operation of heart valve

I did not want a mechanical valve on my 3rd OHS but my tissue valve from 2014 failed - broke a leaflet so it was stuck open / ineffective. All the docs I spoke with were in accord with mechanical valve and I went with that. TAVR through the femoral was not an option even though that had been my...

My bionic valve is not so noisy.

I had On-X installed just over a year ago -can hear it in a very quiet room but no one else seems to notice. It appears to be working fine even though it’s quiet. Met with cardiologist today for routine follow up. No issues, no concerns ho hum. I take aspirin in the am and warfarin at night...

Mechanical valves ... but what about the ticking?

Digressing from valve stuff - Wow that alien facehugger is disturbing!😂😂😂 I have been on CPAP since before my second surgery - my wife had enough of the snoring & I was qualified. It takes some getting used to but it is really worth it. I used to have the nasal mask and wore chin strap around...

    Resting HR post-AVR surgery

This last surgery was #3 - similar to you I was in good shape going into it - great way to get new parts. Makes the healing better - still not easy. 1-1/2 years out - I feel great but my times are slower. Is it the heart or my age? 55 yo now. Apple Watch tells me RHR = 54 but that does...

Sweet 16 for Bovine Aortic Valve

Congrats on the 16 yrs! The cow valve they tried did not make it past the surgeon's inspection, so threw in the pig valve instead. That one failed after 8 years, so June 22 went mechanical at 55. More power to you - hope the moo-moo keeps on going. For what its worth - mine failed suddenly...

Do you have sternum pain after open heart surgery?

Sneezing was very intense week or two after surgery- a cold like you describe - yech. The pillow really helped support my sternum. Squeeze pillow tight against the chest before the sneeze - worked great. More preventative tip that I learned was to rub the tip of you nose to stop the sneeze.

New Member Dfw area - St. Jude Valve

Trying to figure out the translations 😜 Elipa is”ok - that’s right”. Rotanmyrkyy is rat poison. Nice card!

Isn’t Warfarin also used to kill rats?

New member intro! Aorta replacement scheduled for Oct 9

I went back to Ann Arbor to the practice that had put in my pig valve in 2014, when I lived in MI. Had the mechanical valve installed this second time around.

New Member Dfw area - St. Jude Valve

I got two century rides in this summer, no bleeding out. I take my weekly finger pinprick for the INR test and the bruise takes a day or two to disappear. I took the pig valve first, 2014, with the thought of the easy TAVR after that valve stopped working- no guarantees- my pig valve broke 2022...

Hoping 3rd time is the charm

I had my first OHS at Strong back in ‘78! I’m sure a lot has changed since then.

    30-Year Anniversary of First OHS

I’ve got the scar with 3 OHS and it is fascinating to see the last scar that healed amazingly well on top of the keloidal mass from my first scar. Also, the lumps / wires / calcification (?) gives my sternum a lot of - texture? 😅

    30-Year Anniversary of First OHS

I’m thinking - Happy Birthday! Maybe still a couple days early. More than half your life was after AVR.

    New heart Surgery Patient.

Ditto to what Chuck said. Personally I planned to get TAVR on my follow up. However, my pig valve did not go stenotic- one of the leaflets broke. I had to get OHS again, and figured with blood thinners/anti coagulation, that life was over. Just last June, 2022. Not true! Active life style...
