    What Diameter Aorta Requires Replacement?

Ultrarunner...just wondering if you are dealing with a high volume center? I don't know what part of Canada you live in, but my experience has always been that I have been seen quickly and in a timely manner depending on what the issue is. My father has also had the same experience. Once my...

    Mederma, Vitamin E and scars?...

I used a silicone patch faithfully under the guidance of a dermatologist. Originally, my scar was red and angry, but after some laser treatments and using this patch, it is not very noticeable, other than one spot at the very top of the incision that has a keloid that refuses to behave...go figure.

Mechanical Aortic Valve and Female Contraception

Dreamwarrior13, I understand you will not be considering the Mirena IUD. I can't help you with the other choices, but I can tell you about my situation. I had the Mirena implanted for both contraception and to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and I have a smaller anatomy and had never had...

Anyone in here in their mid 40's and what did your surgeon advise on valve type.

That is great news! Before you know it, you will be on the recovery side. Wishing you all the very best with your upcoming surgery. Glad that you have made a decision on the valve . Now, no looking in the rear view mirror. :) Look forward to an update when all is said and done.

Anyone in here in their mid 40's and what did your surgeon advise on valve type.

Chiming in late. I .had a carpentier edwards bovine tissue valves implanted at 45. I spoke extensively with the surgeon and based on a number of factors including going with my gut, tissue was the choice. It's been over 5 years and i have no regrets. I don't look forward to another surgery, but...

Age old question..... tissue or mechanical

Thank you Dornole. That was very well put. I, also fall between the logic and intuition (as probably most of us do). When I needed AVR, I did a ton of research on the topic, spoke with my specialists and others about my options, but also listened to my gut. I certainly value everyone's input...

Age old question..... tissue or mechanical

Neil, Sometimes, it is not an either/or choice. i.e. re-op or be on coumadin. For example, perhaps you are a young woman who really wants to have children but you really do not want to have another open heart surgery down the road. Here is where the water gets muddied. Now you are in the...

Age old question..... tissue or mechanical

Good point Neil. :) As others have said, we have to figure out what we can live with to help make the decision. I am a data type of person, so like the statistics side. Of course, none of us know where we will fall in the statistics! I have a tissue valve so am interested in this information...

Age old question..... tissue or mechanical

Pellicle: RE: TAVR My aunt, at age 84 had TAVR (two years ago in February) along with 3 stents! Because of her age and other health issues i.e. on medication for a rare blood condition and because she was frail, they decided against standard OHS. I have a posted if anyone is interested in...

    Near Death Experiences

This is a very interesting topic and one that my dear aunt experienced due to sudden cardiac arrest. She suffered a massive heart attack and had to be 'paddled' back a number of times. She and my uncle lived in a small town and believe it or not, it was the local hospital that brought her back...

Advances in Aortic Valve & Aneurysm Surgery

Thanks for sharing and an interesting and informative webinar, AZ Don! I wonder if he ruffled any feathers amongst his peers being so 'pro' tissue in the under 60 category. I found his statement pretty provocative in that he believes mechanical valves will be extinct. However, he has way...

Anyone getting ready to partake in any sporting events anytime soon?

Ok. I am doing nothing clearly as exciting as all of you, but here is my schedule. On a weekly basis, Yoga, 3 days a week. Step and aerobics class 2 days a week, weights 2x a week. Outdoor recreational tennis, volleyball and cycling season starts so I will be partaking in them this summer. :)...
