    Coumadin Long Term

Coumadin/warfarin makes the pharma companies NO money. Its patent is long expired and the generic is available for a 90 day supply for $10. Of course they're trying to find a replacement! They are in business to make money. Doctors think it's voodoo because they don't understand the drug, but...

    Very high dosage

Charlie...warfarin has been around since the 1950s. I know of a patient who had valve replacement in the 50s as a child. He has been on warfarin all this time. Truly, this is a medication with few side effects when taken and monitored properly. As far as your high dosage, if you're active and...

    long term members

Nice to see everyone. :) I joined June 9th, 2001 - exactly 1 week before my AVR. That's 12 1/2 years! I had lurked a bit before that. I don't post much anymore, but I do drop in from time to time to read posts.

    warfarin dosage levels

Pellicle, There doesn't seem to be any correlation between body size and warfarin dosage. Both my husband and I are on warfarin, he's 58 years old, 6'4" tall, 265 lbs and takes 22mg of warfarin per week (3 mg x 6, 4 mg x1), he fabricates custom cars and is on his feet all day, up and down on...

How much Vitamin K do you consume?

I do not pay any attention to the amount of Vit K I get. I do take a multivitamin that has 60% (or so) of the RDA. I eat cooked spinach about 2 x per week. I have a serving of broccoli a week. I pig out on asparagus when it's in season. I love salads and have one with spinach, romaine, and...

V8 ...oops! Messed up on a vegetable juice choice.

I agree with Protime. I do drink about 4 oz of V8 every morning. I wrote to Campbell corp to find out the Vit K content, once upon a time, and their response was, "We do not have to list Vit K content, as the FDA doesn't require it." Harumph!

    All Colorado Members, Check IN!

Ok. I'm sure that most of you know of the wildfires we're having here in Colorado. I'm in the Denver Metro area, and in no danger, but I know there are others here who are in harms way: Christina? Herb? Anyone else? I can't even begin to tell you what it is like here Coming north from Pueblo...

    Coumadin and " romance"

It is an anticoagulant. Those of us on Coumadin/warfarin do not have blood that is any thinner than the average person. The coumadin stops a process that creates clots. Coumadin doesn't do anything to the flowability of the blood, just how fast it starts to clot. A "thinner" would mean that the...

Checked out today with Low INR

I'd say this is the culprit.

    Coumadin and " romance"

Hi Patti and welcome, You're husband's friend is nuts. Warfarin just keeps the blood from forming clots, it doesn't make your blood thin or anything like that. My husband is on warfarin because he has a blood disorder. We discovered the disorder when he had a pulmonary embolism. Our romantic...

    Pradaxa, Xarelto, Warfarin

Sarah, The whole selling point that the pharma companies are making is that Pradaxa doesn't need testing, and that there's no dosage adjustment needed. Having an anticoagulant for female valve patients wanting to have children without the birth defects that warfarin can cause is great, but...

    Two weeks till surgery

Bassman, Your experience with Coumadin depends entirely on how well your Coumadin manager manages it. At first it is a pain because your dosage is constantly changing as you heal and start to eat normally and become more active. I'd say about 3-5 months out, it should be fairly level. Many of...

How do you tell young children you need surgery?

Marc...my only caution is, don't tell them too soon. Kids have a way of worrying about things, so tell them closer to the surgery. I told my kids, 11, 8 & 5, once we had all the arrangements made. The car analogy is a great way to tell them. They seem to understand that.

Heart beats too hard when i lie down

Deno...since your surgery was 5-6 years ago, and this is a new "experience", I would definitely make an appointment with either my PCP or cardiologist. If it's interfering with your daily life (and sleep is part of your daily life) then you should have it looked at. JMHO
