    Scar from surgery

I believe the young Brit you mention is Sarah_Lousie. I found her optimism in spite of what seemed like a continuous battle to survive since she was born, to be inspiring. For anyone not familiar with her, here is a link to her first post here...

    Just diagnosed with Aortic Stenosis

My experience began with an echo revealing aortic stenosis at just over 1.0cm2 in 2007. Cardiologist mentioned there is no good way to estimate how long it would be before surgery was necessary but 5 years might be a good guess but then again it could just as easily be ten years. The stenosis...

    Back in waiting room again

Paleowoman, earlier this year my initial echo report came back as severe stenosis just after five years of replacement, following a great report the year before. However, the test was at a different hospital than where my cardiologist is and she was on maternity leave. A fill-in cardiologist...

29yrs - valve choice and aortic aneurysm ( difficult decision due to way of life )

I might think this over a bit if your decision is tissue valve. I'm thinking you might go with an Edwards tissue and get ten years before a reop. But if you stay with original you might get even longer and not have to worry about scar tissue and removing the tissue valve at reop. Considering...

    First pre op appointmentit

I think it varies widely. My post op went something like this. Five nights in hospital then went home. Seven days later a check with family doctor,Seven days after that and had the staples removed from the chest incision. First visit to the cardiologist was at two months. Just had a EKG, with...

    St. Jude Trifecta tissue valve

mn2mx, what are you asking about, the surgeon comment about hoping for a 23mm but the opening only big enough for a 21mm to fit correctly? Basically to get a 23mm to fit a 21mm opening they would have had to surgically enlarge the opening, which they sometimes do to prevent valve mismatch for a...

    Thoracentesis for pleural effusion

When I had valve surgery my roommate was there for a week for something like this, but they were able to fix him with some drugs over a week stay. I asked alot about how to prevent this and so did he. There really isn't any way other than don't lift more than your told to and use the pillow...

Seeing Surgeion Tomorrow - 6 month follow - up

You might want to ask about your medications, you have two listed in your profile maybe one of them could be slowing the healing process of your aching shoulders. I looked at the medications you listed and not knowing what they actually were I looked them up. I guess the xarelto is for a-fib...

    Surgery delay after pre-op testing?

I was 45 in the same system, cardiologist told me she thought tissue would be preferable, and surgeon told me he would be about 50/50 if it were him choosing.

How soon can I fly after BAOV replacement?

I think its realistic if your surgery goes OK and your recovery is OK at the one month point. But sometimes recoveries take a lot longer than expected. If you could wait for a month after to book, just to see how your feeling for sure; that's what I'd do. I think the odds are good for you doing...

52 year old choosing between mechanical and bioprosthetic valve

Yeah I think the 70+ group skews the data, which leads to your belief that at 62 a mechanical valve would be the choice of a small minority. I'd say that informal poll of 50/50 for the age group of 55-60 might be a truer representation of the choices being made. Although in these forums you hear...

52 year old choosing between mechanical and bioprosthetic valve

McBon, was that 80/20 figure for those 55-60 only or did it include the 70+ group that make up the majority of valve operations. That might explain the wide difference. I checked back at that transcript and it was Dr. Reul talking with Cooley, and not Cooley as I mentioned, But he mentions also...

52 year old choosing between mechanical and bioprosthetic valve

A 1 hour video of a valve surgery I watched before my surgery, was fairly informative to me. It kind of touched on various variables one would consider. It seems to have disappeared( I can no longer find it), but a transcript is here: http://www.or-live.com/transcripts/med_1326_186.pdf Dr...

    Shaving before surgery

I sort of had two preops as I was bumped from a Monday, then done on Wednesday. I was admitted on Sunday the day before first scheduled. That day sometime a nurse brought electric clippers with a disposable head and instructed me to shave my chest. I had no idea how much so just did upper chest...

Anyone in here in their mid 40's and what did your surgeon advise on valve type.

I used a sleep mask and ear plugs often. I find the earplugs help me from waking from noise. This is the type I like best. http://www.amazon.com/3M-Classic-Earplugs-310-1060-Uncorded/dp/B008MCTLJE/ref=zg_bs_tab_pd_tr_2 After I'm asleep I usually don't even hear the alarm clock go off if its set.
