How did you deal with anxiety and depression?

Hi! I am not sure if I understand you correctly, but from what I've been reading I think you're waiting on a heart surgery. I have recently had mine in April but did not experience any depression. I am a now 19-year old dutch girl and understand that you feel like you've been robbed of your...

Resuming bicycling after OHS - sternum healing

I returned on my bike 6 weeks after the surgery, but too be honest I probably could have gotten on it earlier, but the doctor wouldn't allow it. I did only ride normal bike rides: to friends and the moment I was allowed to I did my grocery shopping on my bike again. I live in the Netherlands so...

    Valve replacement surgery

Hi! Welcome to the forum, another young person! I am 19 and got 2 valves replaced in april when I was 18! It's good to see you're in a good place, you feel ready and you are! It's good you're going with the mechanical valve. I didn't get a choice because I needed te ross surgery, but for me...

    Question about sternum pain

I didn't think the pain was that bad. Only when I had to cough, and at night when I was trying to find a position to sleep in. But it's not something you should worry about, it's very doable :)

    Some Questions for the Ladies

The bigger because of the fluids thing lasted a few weeks. Most of the fluids went away in the first two weeks, but there was still some left that stayed for about 4 to 5 weeks I think.

    Some Questions for the Ladies

I would definitely recommend wearing a bra. It depends on your size, but even though I did wear a bra from 3 days on after the surgery my incision changed because of the weight of my breasts. I wore a sports bra without underwire, they told me I was not allowed to wear an underwired bra for...

Alcohol and Drugs after open heart surgery

I had a ross procedure myself. @ Pellicle It's interesting to hear your response to alcohol! I haven't noticed anything like that yet.

Alcohol and Drugs after open heart surgery

Hi everyone, Something completely different. I'm not sure if everyone is comfortable discussing this, but this is the only place where I thought I could ask this question. Obviously alcohol and drugs are a no go for everyone who wants to live a healthy life. But, is there more risk for people...

    Hair color changed after surgery?

Hi everyone, so a little bit of a strange question. I recently went to my hairdresser and she asked me whether I had recently dyed my hair. I haven't in years. Then she pointed out a difference in my hair color near my roots. It went around my entire head, like I hadn't touched up the hair color...

    Surgery Video

That's amazing! Here in the Netherlands they never do that but I would have loved to see the video. I'm not sure they even video tape the surgery. Now I know they operated on my heart, but it would be so interesting to actually see the footage and realize what they did!

8 weeks post and I am an idiotl?

Hi! You're not an idiot haha! I bought tickets for a 3 day camping music festival that was 4 weeks after my surgery. I did not sell the tickets until there were only two days left till the festival. I did not want to accept that I was not going to be able to go there 4 weeks after my ross...

Difficulty choosing the right valve for me.

Hi! I might be a little late with my message but I thought I would just share my experience. I just had the Ross procedure done in April. The Ross procedure is not opted unless the doctors are sure you are a good option. Since I am an 18 year old girl, a mechanical valve was not a good idea...

Chest cracking and tiny bumps on sternum scar...

I'm not sure about the cracking, but my doctor did tell me that the bumps that I was feeling at the scar were either sternum wiring or ends of the stitches. He said not to worry about that, unless the stitches would start to come out of the skin, then you had to get them removed.
