Yep, it's one week till my AVR operation with a mechanical valve and dacron graft installation (bentall procedure). It's now starting to feel real!

I've been hitting the gym each day to get in the best shape possible before my surgery. My support network is ready and waiting to assist with my recovery.

Thanks everyone here for the information, experiences and advice. I've also also started to chat with some forum members here directly too which has helped, so cheers :)

Looking forward to getting to the 'other side' and start the recovery process.

I will post an update once I'm able to after my surgery.

Cheers!

my view is that now its time to rest. If you didn't have it 3 months ago then you won't get it now. Just ease back and slip into maintenance mode.

see ya then then

You have the right attitude and it is great that you've been working out and getting in good condition for the procedure!

I would agree with Pellicle that the final week is time to relax so that you go into the procedure fully rested. When I had my procedure, I approached it like I would have prepared for a race or martial arts tournament. Worked hard at conditioning, but then did what in sports is called a "taper down" during the final week leading up to the competition or in this case the operation. This gives your body time to fully rest from all of the hard training so that you have maximal performance during said competition. Yeah, heading into OHS is kind of like going into a sports competition and you want to go in in the best condition possible, but fully rested up.

Please keep us posted and we'll see you on the other side! :)

Good luck and keep us posted! Sounds like you have things physically in order. Have you got your house in order for recovery? Things easily reachable? A favorite comfortable place to sit that’s easy to get in and out of? A good coughing pillow to hug when you need to cough? There are threads in the forum with many ideas.

Yeah I'm stopping all PT sessions and just doing light cardio work. I also find the endorphin kick after training helps with my mental side too.

Speak soon.

Thanks Chuck. That's a good comparison. I'm just doing light cardio this week. Then will completely rest for 3-4 days prior to the big day.

Thanks Superman. I've started practicing not using my arms for basic daily tasks. My partner is taking time off work to assist where required.

I remember swallowing my pride during my first week home after surgery, and asking my wife to open a jar of olives for me. 😦 It's time to swallow the pride and recover. Plenty of time to prove our manliness after recovery.

100% Chuck....I'll be leaving my ego at the front door during recovery :D

Bravo!!

So, my surgeon rang me last Wednesday to let me know 2 of his team members (perfusionist and another) aren't available for my original surgery date which was today, due to unforeseen circumstances.

It's now this Friday at 8am, so only a few days extra waiting. I'm glad he called and told me he wants the A Team around him for my surgery :) I could have kept the same date but in the public hospital (I'm going private). I said no I will wait.

Thanks for the update. Good decision to wait.
