I have been to the ER many times but never as the patient. Out of the blue Saturday morning my nose started to bleed. I do have a history of nose bleeds from time to time going back to when I was a teenager but never anything like this. I have had a few small nose bleeds since surgery last year but they resolved themselves in about five minutes. I think those were just due to the dry air inside. I know this was worse than I have ever experienced because of the warfarin and aspirin but it was still scary. This one went on for hours. Our nearest hospital is an hour away so that made for a fun car ride. Doctor finally got it to stop, packed my left nostril and sent me on my way with a prescription for Keflex. I follow up with an ENT doctor tomorrow to remove the packing and find the source of the bleed. INR was a 2.3 at the hospital which was a little higher than normal for me but still is in range. Keeping a close eye on my INR knowing that antibiotics can increase it. Wish me luck in resolving this issue before my two trips next month!!

Nose bleeds are a pain in the A. I have found nose sprays like "Ocean" and nasal washes help a lot.......also a whole house or area humidifier helps to keep nasal passages moist. Keep the faith, warmer air is just around the corner.
Thanks. I will definitely ask about a nose spray to use. We do have a humidifier built into our heating system and I keep the heat low at night. I have been forcing myself to take walks outside just to get some fresh air. Really looking for some warmer weather!!
Be well.

Sounds like a PITA

If you ask me 2.3 is perfectly in range.

Best of luck with finding the cause. Myself I've only ever had Will Smith sorts of nose bleeds...

In the Midwest, it is the drier air that can cause nosebleeds.

The ENT doctor cauterized the blood vessel that appeared to be the culprit. YEA!! Fingers crossed that there is not a reoccurrence.

My experience is that cauterizing will help......but only for a little while. The best advice given me is:
use a nasal wash daily
use "ocean" as needed during cold, dry periods
blow one nostril at a time......and not too hard

PS: the drug Afrin nose decongetant works well to clot nose bleeding.....but its use must be limited. Read the label.

I have a few things that help with my nosebleeds. First I use Ayr no drip saline nasal gel to keep my nasal passages moist. I use oxygen at night so that coupled with the dry air and Warfarin and aspirin combo does not help. When I do get a nose bleed putting ice on my upper lip helps and I bought something called BleedCease which really works well to stop a bleed quickly. It is basically a small plug you put up your nose that has Calcium Alginate in it which is a natural biopolymer which stops a bleed in it's tracks. I bought mine from Amazon. I keep them on hand at all times.

I had chronic nosebleeds as a child. Cauterization cured them permanently. However now 55 years later occasional nose bleeds have returned. It seems related to Flonase.

Thank you for the suggestions. The ENT doctor did suggest the Afrin and to use it if I got another nose bleed so I did pick that up. I will look for the other products mentioned.

no need to be snarky about it...
out of interest how do you think the angry faces are interpreted?

Much like the transition of "gay" to a specific meaning the Snark had a different meaning once

"A dear uncle of mine (after whom I was named)
Remarked, when I bade him farewell—"
"Oh, skip your dear uncle!" the Bellman exclaimed,
As he angrily tingled his bell.

"He remarked to me then," said that mildest of men,
"'If your Snark be a Snark, that is right:
Fetch it home by all means—you may serve it with greens,
And it's handy for striking a light.

"'You may seek it with thimbles—and seek it with care;
You may hunt it with forks and hope;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
You may charm it with smiles and soap—'"

("That's exactly the method," the Bellman bold
In a hasty parenthesis cried,
"That's exactly the way I have always been told
That the capture of Snarks should be tried!")

"'But oh, beamish nephew, beware of the day,
If your Snark be a Boojum! For then
You will softly and suddenly vanish away,
And never be met with again!'

In order to be all inclusive, this is the translation for those of us on warfarin:

"Fetch it home by all means- but you must avoid greens."
This is outdated dogma, you should eat Greens, unless your a vegetarian.

personally I recommend everyone avoid the Greens ... but then, looking at their polling results almost everyone does...

The poem is Alice in Wonderland where things are never what they seem. You should give attribution, it's polite. However the North American definition of snarky: (1) critical or mocking in an indirect or sarcastic way. (2) bad-tempered or irritable.
