How is the twilight zone this time of year? My family and I went to Martha's vineyard for the first time in June and it was really nice. We're thinking about the Poconos in August but who knows?

If it hasn't been isolated yet how do you know it's from China?

So as I caught up in this thread, I found myself pondering a question. Turns out, I’m not the first to have that question. The NY Times had an article on the very subject two years prior to the pandemic.

The question I had was why there aren’t vaccines for everything, considering how fast these were brought to market. The answer, as is typically the case, seems to be money (at least part of it anyway). It also explains how these were brought about so quickly. A lot more money was thrown at them.

Touche. I wish that I'd been quick enough to think of your answer to Shakey. As I understand, almost l/4 of all new Covid cases have come out of Florida......so you have to make allowances. People like him spend way too much time out in the sun (cooked brains??)...... This makes problem-solving dialog difficult.
I'm new here guys, and not an admin/moderator. However, despite my own big tangent posted above, I'd like to bring the thread back to a discussion about how Covid directly affects valve replacement patients.
If your answer is "It doesn't affect it because Covid isn't real", or something to that effect, ok. Not gonna argue with that. DFTT
For the rest of us, how is it affecting your health care choices/behavior patterns? I'm vaccinated, but in an area where Delta is spinning up aggressively. I'm 4 weeks out from surgery. I've pretty much explained the situation to my non-vaxxed friends and said "at 4 weeks out, I'm not going to run the risk that I catch anything from you, so I'll see you (possibly) in a couple of months. Not gonna spike it on the 5 yard line.". I'm back to wearing masks in crowded stores.
I don't think there's good data on the relative outcomes for those with bio/mechanical valves who get Covid vs. non-replaced valves. My guess is that there's too many confounders in the affected population to draw conclusions.

As far as masks go, I just might be a long term nerd outlier amongst the general populous. My wife and I were among the few (10-20% of shoppers?) masking up in stores this weekend.
Covid or not, we really enjoyed not having the regular flu or norovirus or even colds run through our house the last year and a half. Even with vaccines, there are other airborn illnesses easy to avoid by simply wearing a mask. And with our winters, it’s kind comfortable for part of the year.
Outdoors and open spaces I don’t wear it. But in tight crowds, why not?

I hear what you're saying and my wife, even though our entire family is fully vaccinated, has been contemplating wearing a mask in stores again. I mean it can't hurt in a way but I'm not really willing to go back to that yet. I understand the point about the flu and common colds but right now I don't think we're in that season. I figure, hopefully not, a variant might come out that the current vaccines don't work on and then I will HAVE to go back to wearing a mask so in the meantime I want to enjoy not wearing one. I do think if we got to the point where everybody just wore a mask in public places all the time that it would be bad socially. I'm not a mental health expert, if you ask those who know me well they would say perhaps I should be studied by one....
, But I think humans evolved to see each other's faces and expressions.I don't struggle at all, these people tend to be the biggest hypocrites, they don't care about anyone but themselves or they would have gotten vaccinated. I do care about those with underlying conditions that prevent the vaccine from doing all it can.
I somehow doubt private insurance will deal with this once over. They don't care if you have had other vaccines, only if you are a smoker. I do hope they do crack down on this. I assume at some point Covid vaccine will be as required for school as Chickpox, measles, etc . What irks me more than anything is the healthcare people that refuse to get it. I have to mask up in their office, yet I catch them not masking and when I asked a few if they were vaccinated some said no.
I am amazed every day at some of the people that should know better that are that ignorant. I am a firm believer of people can do what they want as long as it does not impact other, if they die from their decisions, so be it, but if they cause someone else to die or be hurt that is when I care.
I am in full agreement with: Cleans the gene pool, cleans the voting pool.

We have not stopped masking in stores since this started over a year ago. Getting ready to order more masks now that they are so cheap and you can get FDA listed masks.
Michael O, Good question about health care choices. I had my surgery April 1st when British Columbia was deep into our third wave. A couple of implications, it was scary to be in hospital and absolutely no visitors allowed unless it was an end of life situation.
Though it was sad to have my husband drop me off at the door, I totally supported the no visitors policy. The last thing a heart surgery ward needs is a Covid outbreak.
As I had not yet been vaccinated, nor had my husband, we completely limited our social interactions prior to my surgery. Wore masks everywhere (which was a public health order at the time)
As Canada’s vaccine supply had not yet ramped up only health care employees, first responders, those over 80 and the immune compromised folks had had the opportunity to be vaccinated. What scared me was that I didn’t know if all hospital employees were vaccinated. Even though masks were worn all the time by all staff at the hospital, I was still somewhat nervous about Covid.
If like you, I was facing surgery in 4 weeks, I would be considered about surgery cancellations, ( I was at the time, but I live on Vancouver Island and it never got to that), I would also want to know the staff vaccination policy of the hospital I choose. Is it mandatory for staff? What is their mask policy and visitor policy?
Since my surgery we have continued to turn down social engagements with anyone who has chosen to not get vaccinated, its just not worth it. We also still wear masks in stores ect, even though our present cases are very low. We do this out of courtesy for the staff who are working all day, every day and thus have many more opportunities for exposure.

I have a hard time taking people seriously that can’t communicate without swearing every other word. I know I’m old fashioned. I don’t care. It erodes his message and just makes those who disagree dig their heels in. You don’t win people over swearing at them and telling them you’re smarter than they are.

There’s a sizable population here locally that opposed getting vaccinated. Then they introduced a lottery. Now people who were opposed are getting vaccinated for a one in whatever chance at winning a couple bucks. No personal convictions at all. I found that amusing.

Yes, in CA they also started giving sizable lottery $ and to enter you had to get vaccinated. It certainly motivated many people.

See, if I actually thought it was dangerous, a lottery would not get me to change my mind. And if I thought it was really a government conspiracy, I wouldn’t tell anyone. Wouldn’t want the black helicopters to show up at my house. Sometimes I think people just like to have stuff to oppose because it somehow gives them purpose.

In other words if there's a virus going around the world that is killing people and there is a vaccine for it What does it matter if we don't know exactly where it came from? Or is this just the beginning to feed the conspiracy theory narrative?
