I have low HDL which seems to be genetically set - nothing has raised it - including exercise. I would love to be able to raise it and lower my cardiac risks.....At least I got my LDL down to 51 and total cholesterol to 94 using statins and a vegan diet. I seemed to be cursed witjh low HDL and high Lp(a).

Well that's lower than my overall cholesterol which is like 160.

Diet, exercise, fish oil etc etc never raised my HDL sadly-now it's lower as my LDL is at 51-------my understanding is when LDL drops HDL can drop as not as much is needed to mop up the LDL--this is an Esselstyn theory

Hi - I have high HDL (averages around 135) it’s not genetic as it wasn’t always that way, but it rose steadily when I adopted a very low carb diet to control diabetes (now in remission). The rise was a bonus. I just found this from a couple of websites:

From Medical News Today: HDL cholesterol: 9 ways to increase it
How to increase HDL:
Consume olive oil
Follow a low carb or ketogenic diet
Add coconut oil to diet
Eat fatty fish often
Avoid artificial trans fats
Plus the usual exercise regularly, quit smoking, lose weight

Fom Verywell Health: How You Can Raise Your HDL Levels
What About a Low-Fat Diet?
Substantial evidence now shows that a low-fat diet often reduces — rather than increases — HDL levels. This result is not specifically caused by “not enough fat,” but rather, is caused by consuming too many carbohydrates. The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have quietly stopped recommending low-fat diets for heart disease prevention. Indeed, it is low-carb diets — and not low-fat diets — which are associated with higher HDL levels.

Most of what you stated will damage your heart.

You cannot consume too many carbohydrates and less there bad keto will damage your heart. Low-fat is the way to go. Low fat reduces HD all because it reduces LDL I got on a low-fat diet and drop my LDL 251. Anything coconut related is bad. It's rated battle damage your heart fish oil is absolutely unnecessary you can get your Omega fatty acids from vegan sources just like the fish do

My entire life I have not be able to get my HDL above 40. Once it was 41 and I assumed that was a mistake. I usually run around HDL 35 and LDL 99, my most recent test my triglycerides jumped to 164, I like them under 150. The ratio is also considered more important and the last few years cardiologists are moving to Advanced Lipid panels where they actually look at the makeup of the cholesterol. And regardless lets not forget genetics.

Hi Kethi, not only is my HDL high but my trigycerides are very low, just 35. The low trigycerides is a reflection of the low amount of carbs I eat, and judging from what I posted the high HDL is due to low carb too.

High triglycerides and low HDL can be markers for insulin resistance or Metabolic Syndrome. Has you physician looked at this possibility?
