Happy New Week, fellow Stay the Coursers!

Continuing to watch a lot of food shows for mental health breaks from the news -- while simultaneously trying not to over-eat and wipe out my 35-pound weight loss that began around the time of my OHS, last September. The other day, I stepped on scales and saw a 4-pound gain, so I cut the junk food and have it back down to just a silly little pound. Would like to stay vigilant and get to a 40-pound loss. As one reward, I had a 6.2 A1C (3-month blood sugar average), my lowest in 15 years and actually just out of the diabetes range, in my bloodwork the other day.

Re the food shows: We discovered something many of you may already be enjoying: The "Uncharted" series on National Geographic featuring chef Gordon Ramsay exploring food-gathering and preparation in diverse cultures around the world. I watched the whole segment from Tasmania, which was fascinating. (Never knew wallabies were tasty game.) Many other segments I haven't been able to see in full yet -- South Africa, Peru, Morocco, Bayou county in Lousiana, and others. I can only assume that this series will be repeated many times or will be available for purchase.

Just a quick amen to the praise for Molly Yeh of "Girl Meets Farm" on the Food Network. Chinese/Jewish heritage. A little farm on the North Dakota/Minnesota border. Talk about out of the ordinary! Wonder if she will do some shows when the farm gets socked in by blizzard conditions. Surely her pantry is well-stocked. But topping everything is Molly's enthusiasm. Can't help but feel better after watching her zest in preparing rhubarb short ribs or Asian scotch eggs.

A sad bit of pandemic news: The husband of my great fitness teacher, Sarah, has tested positive for Covid-19 and is quite ill. He's not showing the usual symptoms -- fever and dry cough -- but has terrible headaches and muscle aches. Just shows you can be considered asymptomatic and yet be carrying the virus. Just hoping/praying that he gets well and that Sarah and the rest of the family don't fall ill. For the time being, they are taking care of him at home. I reluctantly left the class in February because of both my post-op/hernia concerns and wariness about covid spread. The state subsequently included gyms in the lockdowns, but they've recently reopened. I would still be wary of group exercise with so many areas, ours included, becoming "hot spots."

Okay, let's try to be of good cheer, and stay our courses, what say? All best to all, cheerio.

Wow, well happy Independence day for those who celebrate it. And a happy Second Half of 2020 to all of us. May we all be swishing long shots like Pistol Pete Maravich. And I'll be seeing y'all later ... whenever.
 
Well, the rolling year is now on the down slope with the days getting shorter already. Happy 4th Superbob, and to all who celebrate the holiday. My husband and I live in Philadelphia during the cooler months but enjoy our beach house in summer. By pure coincidence we purchased the beach house, located on Fire Island, NY, from a man who also lived in Philadelphia. He, or his predecessors, we're not sure, named the house "Liberty Bell." Most of the almost 300 houses here in Cherry Grove have names, a bit of whimsy in keeping with the magical nature of this place. So our house is patriotic by nature. Superbob, sorry to read about your acquaintance testing positive for the virus. According to a dire report I heard the other day, if we keep seeing the explosive growth in cases in this country, everyone will know someone who is ill with it. Oh well, we'll continue to be safe and hope for the best.

Happy 4th SB and everyone else. It looks like we're going to have a quiet one this year. California has started to shut down again after rising positive tests and hospitalizations. I've been going in to work 3 days a week lately but the workload has slowed for me and I will probably only go in twice a week until new work comes in. I am planning on retiring in August. My health is much better without work. Hope to find something part time local since I'm only 63 and need to work a few more years.
I'm still trying to exercise 5-6 days a week and weight is still the same. Most of the people I talk to are gaining during the shutdown.
We heard a couple in our group of runners tested positive. We haven't seen them in months so we weren't exposed but it's the first people we know that have tested positive. Up until now we only heard of one other person that got it.

Hey, Jim and Martin, good to hear from two of our stalwart Stay-the-Coursers from the Atlantic to the Pacific! Happy Fourth tomorrow. We are going to have a really quiet gathering here (well quiet except for all the amateur fireworks shows sure to erupt). I ordered a new grill and we got it assembled except for four small but necessary fasteners that weren't in the box. I hate it when that happens. I have informed Weber and gotten a "case number" but not the parts yet. Probably just as well -- going to be 100-plus tomorrow and I'm not keen on cooking out when it's that hot. So we will do takeout --maybe barbecued ribs and such.

Holding the weight is a positive, Martin. Pleased to say I'm still holding to my 30-pound loss from last fall (partially result of my OHS; maybe those nurses at Chapel Hill walking me so much). I already bragged on my 6.2 A1C but equally pleased that my HDL, the "good" cholesterol, has risen markedly and now is in the normal range at 49. It's always been low even back in the days I ran marathons and 10Ks. Exercise is supposed to help raise it so I must be doing something right. Mostly my activity is regular dogwalking (though the heat and humidity make it tough any time of day) and work around the house and running errands. I have also ordered a little portable elliptical that I can use here at my desk or in my recliner watching TV.

Got to keep moving, as the late great baseball pitcher Satchel Paige said, 'cause "something might be gaining on you."
