I need a valve re-replacement asap, but I don't know if it's an emergency, or if I have time to shop around for a surgeon. I'm not comfortable with the surgeon I was referred in another Florida city.

Any ideas are most welcome - I have heard that a second operation requires a surgeon experienced in re-replacements

Thanks in advance!!

Charlottekaye, I see your location says Georgia. Are you now living in Florida? I do have some experience (a close family member) with the cardiac medical field of Florida although I do not have high opinions of said experiences and therefore will not recommend that particular hospital. If you're not comfortable with the surgeon you were referred to, you should definitely look for a different surgeon. You say you need the re-replacement "asap" but you don't know if its an emergency. Did your doctor say ASAP? I'd like to think that if it was an "emergency" they would have admitted you to a hospital immediately. There is a Mayo Clinic in Florida (Jacksonville I think?). I know the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is outstanding and would assume the same of Florida. Is this an option for you?

I would recommend that you take a serious look at the Cleveland Clinic. I had my aortic valve and root replacd here last Wednesday. This place is phenomenal, and based upon my experience here, I would highly recommend it to anyone. My surgeon was Dr. Sabik and my experience with him has been fantastic. Welcome to the site, let me know if I can answer any other questions. You can send your medical file here and they will provide you with a second opinion (regardless of whether or not you have surgery here).

Take Care.

I think in the past there may have been a person or two who had surgery there in Sarasota. I know not long after my surgery, I was coming down to LBK, and my Dr. Said that hospital had a very good cardiac program if I needed something. So, I'd start with a search on here for any info on that. If you want to stay in Fl., I would then do a search for that and see what comes up. There have been quiet a few members who have successfully had surgery in the state. Then, if you are willing to travel farther, do as others suggest and look at Cleveland or Mayo.

I'd call and get copies of your tests ASAP so you have a better understanding of what's going on and how urgent it is.

During my searches for a valve surgeon, a name that popped up quite a bit as an expert in the field of valve repairs and replacements was Dr. Kevin Accola from the Florida Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery in Orlando. I don't know how far Orlando Is from Venice, but at least in the same state.

If you are willing to drive to Atlanta you can check out Dr. Robert Guyton at Emory Midtown. 404-686-2513. I think he is one of the best.
He did mine 7 months ago.

It is not Venice but I would recommend Dr Kevin Accola at Florida Hospital in Orlando. He has a great team of people including someone always on the floor when you are in the hospital to aid in and supervise your care.

Hello-
Not sure if you are willing to travel, but my mother had an aortic valve replacement last summer with Dr. McCarthy at Northwestern in Chicago.
He used to be at Cleveland Clinic. He was ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT! The surgery was a big success! Every nurse at the hospital couldn't stop raving about Dr. McCarthy and said all of his patients recover beautifully. He has an excellent reputation.

Hi Tom,

Do they allow you to choose surgeons at Cleveland or they randomly assign one to patients? I wish you have a quick recovery!

Yes! Just a short drive south of Venice in Fort Myers. Dr. Paul DiGorgi did my valve replacement and aortic graft as minimally invasive surgery. He and everyone on his entire team were fantastic! Can’t say enough good things about him and the facility at Lee Memorial HealthPark Hospital. You’d be in great hands. He’s very well respected and many surgeons travel from all over the world to observe and learn his techniques. I don’t know why they aren’t more widely known. DM me if you have any questions or if I can be if any further help. I highly recommend him!

Dr. Kevin Accola at Florida Hospital in Orlando did my AVR. He is highly regarded, recommended and does 100’s a year. However I don’t know if he does reoperations, I would call, if he does I would highly recommend him.
