Hello all! My story is somewhat unusual compared to what I read on pre-surgery...

I am home...feeling rough, depending how well I might sleep or lay in bed.
I am told the surgery went well. The surgery was scheduled at 8:30 a.m on Fri. March 6th.. I do remember having a meal that night, but do not remember the visitors that evening nor any events that day. Dr. Borkon was unable to repair my mitral valve and installed a metal valve along with a single bypass on a secondary artery close to the heart. The donor vein was found i the chest cavity as well.

I spent two days in ICU because my blood pressure was too low to move me. After changing meds, the pressure came up, Sat. night, the attending nurse (who was wonderful) asked if I needed anything for pain, and for sleep. Normally I would decline, but I was in pain, and could use the sleep...there was were three IV ports in me, and they were used for some morphine and a sleep injection......

I woke up dillusional, after approx. 12 hours of sleep. I didn't know where I was, who was taking care of me, and what day or time it was. After about an hour, everything came around and later, on Sun. evening, I was moved to a regular room.

At some point, the Dr.'s started warfarin, trying to get my IR to 2.5-3.5 and that is most of the story now...once again, all they could increase it to is 1.4 for 3 straight days...needless to say, I am now upset. Asking them to release me so that I can rest in own bed, they did not want to do that....so I bargained for 2 more days, and that was it...also asking for a visiting nurse to come to my home while they continued their upping the dosage.

Friday, I checked out, with a IR level at 2.3...still not where it's supposed to be...after checks to another nearby St. Luke's hosp. on Sat. and Sun. my IR had stabilized at 2.2. Sunday even. I started 5 mg. dosage hopefully wanting to see what that will do.

I have not heard from the Dr.'s since Sat. evening. So tomorrow, I will call and see what's going to happpen from there....

Dyna....It sounds like you have had a tough time of it. I know what you speak of, with the pain isssues...:(...hang in there, my friend!

Steve :)

steve sorry your goin through a rough time, hopefully things will get better for you soon, its not that the pain gets glossed over its just that some get through it easier than others, toss of a coin i suppose, yea its no picnic and defo some have it worse than others, plus i like to be positive about it for people who are waiting for the op,just my opinion by the way

Its not a easy ride for everybody. After my sons first surgery his lung collapsed and it took him 2 weeks to recover, second time around he seemed to recover much quicker but had problems with low bp and then high bp which he as to take medication for. Freaks me out a bit because i worry there will be problems, when he as his third surgery. I only seem to mention these problems when somebody brings them up. Best of luck with your recovery and hope you get your INR sorted out soon. All the best.

Steve, yep it seems like the pain issues get glossed over at times & this sorta surgery is made out to be "no big deal" by some.''

Here's hoping you get your INR settled out, docs pulled me off the warfarin because I just didn't need it.

Steve,
Glad everything is finally going better for you.
Everyone has a different experience. Valve replacement is not a piece of cake for most people. However, it usually isn't as awful as what some go through.
When I had replacement, I had relatively little pain, and since I received a bovine valve, I didn't have to deal with getting an INR level regulated before discharge. My biggest problem was sleeping once I got home, and I hope you skip that one!:)

Yup, it's no easy ride......hospital kept me for 16 days, but I was okay with that.
Hubby was scared to be left alone in charge of my care anyway.
STeve, rest often, and don't hesitate to call the docs back with any concerns that you may have during recovery. :)

Wishing you all the best in your recovery. I hope the recovery side of the mountain becomes a snowball for you with faster & better recovery news as time goes on.

Good luck & God Bless
